Default Reccomendations for help with SEO?

So we have never done any real SEO on our site and every time we tried it it never worked but I believe that is because we were using joomla and never had any SEO plug ins installed correctly.

We have started making some money out of dumb luck recently and are in the process of switching over to Wordpress with the Yoast plug in but I was trying to look for some advice on how to proceed. We were given a referral to someone from one of our affiliate managers but he has asked for (what we think is) an obscene amount of money so we are trying to figure out if it's worth it to hire someone or if we can just do it ourselves.

There are no classified top secrets to understanding SEO, everything the specialists can do, you could also do. It mostly comes down to time and research. Google has millions of articles, many are useless, many are very good so you'll have to wade through them all. Yoast is very good as a guide to helping you optimise your pages.
If you've got the time, I think you should do it yourself. It's mostly a slow process so it will take some commitment.

Yeah, I just wasn't sure how to tell what was good info and what was bogus. Although I would assume that if their article is ranked high then they may know what they are doing. I know we did have someone helping us and showed me a lot when we first rolled over to joomla but that was probably 10 years ago.

I know that some of the stuff is not good any more like applying to link directories and the lot but I think the very basics haven't changed. I'll look into it more and start from there, thanks!

Your website has pretty good speed (I was expecting a disaster given your introduction heh). One thing your site needs is some technical optimizations. Take a look at your scores in Google's Page Speed Insights: https://developers.google.com/speed/...2F&tab=desktop

With a little work, I'd bet you can get your site to paint in less than a second. Doing this will reduce your bounce rate. Reducing your bounce rate will improve some of the internal user metrics Google uses to track visitors. When your users are more engaged, Google gives you higher rankings. This is of course one of a thousand things that can help with your placement in the SERPS, but it is my contribution to this thread.

It all takes time and effort. You just also need to be patient and put in some good hard working hours every day into your projects and you'll see great and hard earned results in no time. I also recommend using Yoast

Wishing you the very best of luck in all of your endeavours.

Thanks! And yes, I have heard nothing but good things about yoast so I figured that was the way to go.

I will check that out now. The main problems we have had are with the meta titles, keywords and descriptions we enter in the back end not displaying in google results, it just displays what is on the actual page instead. We recently updated the server which made the pages load SO much faster, it was pretty bad until recently. I appreciate the help!

You should take the help of your developer to put Keywords, description and other Meta tags. As I have seen websites developed in Wordpress uses Plugin to set Meta tags. You can set meta in index HTML file in Head section. Also, make the Title of home page relevant to your services you are providing. There is limit of Word count for title, keywords and description that you should follow.

Don't know why but many SEOs are talking about Yoast but there many other good options: RankMath, Squirlly SEO etc.

Check the also cause Yoast is too heavy

At least Yoast is not going to stop supporting or sell to a rogue developer. Perhaps those other plugins are good and reliable but Yoast has a lot of trust.
