I do not think this topic was posted yet (if so notify me and I will merge it) but I found it interesting.

These actions could have a big impact on a number of industries not just gambling, although I expect the largest impact may be felt by those involved more in political activism, but once used there it will most likely expand.

Russia has always had a very rocky relationship with Internet expression, so this is not at all surprising.

Political activism is impacted everywhere. There is a line you can not cross anywhere. In the west you can not express a negative feelings towards certain people, unless it is allowed (you can hate racists or "fake news spreaders" or child abusers as much as you want [whatever it is]). Is Russia really that bad? That much different? I do not know. I see everywhere in the world an official line and then the anti-establishment line. There is no difference in stupidity, but the first is supported by official power, the second is officially suppressed by the state power. The later is also supported by non-friends: so Russia is supporting conspiracies in the West; West is supporting opposition in Russia. Both sides have success it seems to bring chaos to their opponents.

My email server is in Russia for example, because I feel it is at the moment it is the safest place for my data. But obviously, because I am Russian and I do not care what happens there and my intention is not to harm Russia.

Yahoo, who brought this news is US based. So it spreads US propaganda. When they will talk about future Facebook censorship, it will be served as inevitable and too late. DNS is de facto controlled by USA, USA also controls the generic domains. So USA can play the game how they support freedom and so on. Bs.

It is really hard to compare the two evils, but I personally have much more troubles coming from West than from Russia. To be the devil's advocate of Russia, they at least do not claim sovereignty over the whole world [but I am pretty sure if they could, they would do it in even harsher way than USA, but they are the losers].

So the less powerful states who can oppose USA will have their own censored ponds and the rest will be USA it seems. Then there will be the deepweb.

Absolutely.

It is a communist state and one of the first rules in a communist regime is control the media. It doesn't surprise me for remotely a second to see that the internet is now being targeted on an extreme level. It's just a shame to see that Google threw in the towel and stopped fighting the good fight against Russia.

Luckily I am from Canada and this won't affect me
