"Site Mark Up" - What Is It?

When looking at some SEO reports, a few times I have seen "Site Mark Up" is low or small. What exactly is "Site Mark Up" and what factors influence it? In doing a little initial research, all I found was talk about Tags. That doesn't make a lot of sense because the website I am looking at where this shows up, there are plenty of tags. H tags, div tags, p tags....

I am just wondering if there are other factors and if not I do not really understand how to increase the tags so reports wouldn't say markup is small. I have tags where they are suppose to be??

I have also seen "Website footprint is small". I just always assumed that meant there were not many links to the website and the website has not been "exploited" for lack of a better work across the Internet.

Tricky to answer exactly without seeing the original writing. But ... I'll have a go.


Site mark-up does refer to the HTML code surrounding the content. If site mark-up is rated low then typically it because the site is using css styles and layouts to define the look and feel - and not specifying the font sizes, colour, face and other elements in every DIV, P statement. Using CSS is more efficent - and some SEO people believe that Google et al will reward sites with higher content ratio with better positions - although I have NEVER seen any evidence (or even a good arguement as to why it should)

Mark-up can also be lower if the site does not use the descriptive alt and title tags in images, and personally I like to take every advantage of these tags to tell search engines wht my page is about - so DO use these tags frequently.

Website footprint ... I had previously interpreted this as the amount of data being sent to the browser for each page - rather than an estimate of link strategy. But it's difficult to tell what the author means without reading their piece.

Makes sense I guess because i use the css file for just about everything that I can.

So footprint, you are interpreting as content almost? How big the page is and elements of the page etc. etc. So a page with little content or just a few banners would have a small footprint. I guess that makes sense as well just like leaving a footprint on the environment. the bigger it is the bigger the footprint or impact on the internet/environment.

I use mark up on my reviews.. don't see any benefit ranking wise but it does present the page in results better.. stands out imo
