The power Google holds over me at least is quite scary to think about and I did not like the introduction of 4 ads.

I have asked my parents and several of my friends, and none of them were aware that the four first results in fact are ads. Being #1 for a keyword now means you are effectively fifth amongst a big part of googlers who are not aware of the fact that the top places are ads.

    Correct,

And this is why they should go back to changing the background color under the ads.

I thought antitrust rules years ago forced them to do this and they started lightening up the backgrounds until one day they just started appearing as white like before they got in trouble.

I think we have a thread here where we discussed this once before as I recall finding a few articles that I had linked that had screenshots that showed the timeline when they changed background colors and the general time frame they changed back.

I think it all comes down to greed.
I don't think the founders of google are greedy. But probably a Sales Head or someone like that wanted to show good income increase numbers.
I mean google is an extremely profitable company, and its founders vastly wealthy. They don't need to use such tactics and blemish the google image.

    Indeed they should.

Hopefully someone will start up a fuzz about it again, but I fear we will see five ads instead of any positive changes (for us).

Google will try to pluck the most valuable results. Therefore, it is increasingly important to build the brand on the Internet. This is why there is more and more difficult to get valuable backlinks from high quality websites. SEO will never die, it'll just changes form spamming internet into branding and creating better quality content.

Mah... for what I see (and unless I'm a complete idiot), for many "money keywords" I don't see too much "so-called quality" in our industry on top of G. Just (at least first 5-8 results for many keywords) some domains with a "standard" wordpress theme, owned by same persons, interlinked each other and with a HUGE amount of spammy (yeah, spammy!) keyword rich backlinks coming from the same sites (spammy) for each domain owned.

    blablablasite1.com
    blablablasite2.com
    blablablasite3.com

Where the only variation is a number (like in example) or a letter after the "blablabla". Same exact content.

So... or I'm a complete idiot or I need an exorcist for my devices or the last black-and-white creature from G was an EPIC FAIL.

No, you are not an idiot. This is how the things are. So either repeat the bullshit that Google shares and that people love to repeat over forums or simply get the job done. You are not idiot so you are not expecting that someone will really tell you how to deceive Google (and SEO is such deceivng)?

Of course Google tries to have the most relevant results and catch any manipulation of SERP, including the whitest seo; but of course he is constantly losing the battle even when they are more and more successful. It is a cat and mouse game, always was, always will be.

Of course it is the best "to have a brand". But it is too costly, way off for most people, unless you saw this 15 years ago and have established website, because big part of the brand for Google is just that the website exists for years. So almost anyone's competition today are those "spammy sites". Instead of constant whinging about them and what they should do or what Google has to do, is not it better to look at their SEO and do it better?

I am personally just happy to keep webistes as they are or in slow decline. I am scared to wake up and open email to see if there are some new problems in WT. Usually there is now some problem and Google does not even say what is the problem. Also it happened to me that I got message that some page is blocked, but it was not. I feel quite insecure to be dependant on the giant, but that is all I can do. They are a big corporation with behavior of corporation and things will get just worse. It means that the manipulation of SERP caled SEO might work even better, because they will be less and less efficient as any other corporation.

Well, hunters for high keywords spend not only a lot of money for links but also create donors/sites related to their niche. Webmasters search new ways to improve their sources. The thing is that 1 guy cant be a real competitor for those companies with 20+ people. The fact - 1 webmaster try to improve one source thinking about Google, new methods of SEO and so on...and meanwhile... a company create 2-5 sites per month, improve their flagship buying unique optimized articles, posting fat content and so on...
P.S. I read this forum several years... And we are always talking about the same things while others just do a lot of different "magic" =))

SEO is not dead. It has never been so important so have a SEO friendly content on your website.
Google update their system often, so you have to make your content SEO friendly.

Your website can still be detected as spam which means your website will be given some penalty points and you will be shown on a bad position in Googles search engine.

Unfortunately, money matters more and more for Google and I think it's getting harder and harder to get good results from SEO. So yeah, you can say SEO is almost dead.
