Hello, i have a question regarding search engines. I recently submited my sites to altavista and google, but its been 2 weeks and my sites are not listed yet. How long does it usually take for altavista and google to place your site in the engine?

Ummmm....forever???
Really, it can take a long time. I never got good listings by Google, until I bought into Yahoo. I don't know if it was a coincidence or not.
It took me about 6 months before I started getting picked up by the SE's, but I made some fatal mistakes in the beginning.
There's a good thread about this lower in this forum - check it out. There is also a LOT of really good info about this down in the Marketing Tips forum.

You may want to check out the "Inktomi" and "LookSmart"
sections within the marketing forum. Some good info there.

Thanks for the info! One more question regarding search engines. Say i get placed on the engine, but need to revise/optimize my pages to get better ranking, now say if i am listed already, and i go ahead and add my site again to reflect my changes, do i have to wait another 2-10 weeks?

It depends on the search engine, once you are in you are reindexed with the whole engine. The time between reindexing varies between the engines but it is never as long as waiting for your original index.
It takes such a long time to get into many of the search engines because of the backlog of sites that are trying to get in, not because they only reindex once a decade. In general you should be reindexed every month. If you paid to get into the index then you may be reindexed as often as every 2 days such as with Inktomi.
All you need to remember is that search engines are the Devil! They put you through hell whilst you wait to see what your little tweaks have done but it's worth it if you can get to the top spots. If I don't get the desired effect after google's next index I'm going to put holy water on my phone cable and see if that helps
ooops too many beers......
