Self-referential links

I stumbled upon a interesting article on google rankings 2013. There was a lot of talk about Self-referential links on the on page optimization. They were saying that it makes a huge difference between the page that is number 1 and the page that is number 3 on google.

The other big thing they were saying is about brand, they noticed they sites that were ranking at number had the "Brand factor". I am confused about Self-referential links specifically, what is the difference of a Self-referential links and a regular internal link? Do they mean that they are linking to the exact same page that they are posting on? For instance if I post this, then copy and paste the url the word seo is that a Self-referential link?

Besides the two things I brought up, it is an interesting article. I look forward to hearing everybody's feedback.

Referential Links: A third type of link is a referential link. It is associated to the associative link. Quite than representing a relationship among two related ideas, a referential link provides a link among an item of information and an explanation of such information. A simple illustration would be a link from a word to an explanation of that word. One easy way of understanding the dissimilarity between referential and associative links is that the items connected by an associative link can exist independently, although are related at a conceptual level.

I'm not either, your post is the first time I've ever heard of them although I inadvertently used both. I just did a search actually a couple of searches using Google and those results were awful, then used Bing and found this site http://www.expertsmind.com/questions...-30151703.aspx for the meaning. I've been using Bing more and more these days.

I definately know that keywords in the page names do little for rankings as one of my retail sites is pretty old and the page names have no keywords in them yet they ranked pretty well (page 1).

As far as SEO stuff, I get the highrankings newsletter and visit their forum - Jill Whalen the lady who started it in 1995 is only 20-25 miles away from me. I watched a Matt Cuffs video and he mentioned her by name so I guess she is a well known SEO Consultant.

Sure, this is based on how the Library of Congress used to establish points of reference well before the internet. This can be easily summed up by your friends at CBR lol...

If Joey knows a lot about Nacy and is friends with her
And Frank is good friends with Nacy too, they just "get each other"
THEN there is a very high probability that Joey and Nacy would also be friends

...or

If A = C
and B = C
then A = B without direct reference.

Now how to achieve this in the scheme of how links should be formed, positioned, and implemented, and in regard to the rest of the factor existing on-page stuff is the real trick. I personally have no idea but I have seen it work and Ill tell you guys exactly how.

Once a site linked to CBR all on their own, yay quality content!!! Anyway... on the same page of this site was an ad for a new online casino. This casinos name was also repeated a couple of times on that page. We ranked for the name of that new casino almost instantly and had never typed its name once, on page, off page, or even in a social reference. It was a "nofollow" advertising link FYI on a very high authority site. If the formula could be broken down and you used some of this info to help you along the way I will do things for you only the lowest people in Vegas would consider doing to talk about it more.
