Default Site migration to new template

Hi - I'm migrating a site to a new theme in wp. Just wondered if anyone has any advice / tips or warnings about potential issues to look out for.

And is it possible to migrate content from one template to another? Or is it a big copy and paste job? 250 pages or more

Ive never done this before. Maybe its easier than i think.

    Thanks for any help.

If you just mean change the template you don't need to move the content. Literally just change the wordpress theme.

Depending on what you're changing from and too there may be some editing needed (ie: if your old theme uses shortcodes or styling that aren't available in the new one or if the widths and content units have changed) but other than that it's quite simple.

I would suggest doing it on a staging environment though rather than the live site and then switching once you're happy with the new version.

    Thanks.

I think potential issue is where for some pages - e.g. a casino review - i add in extra copy fields. Basically the article structure is different because im aiming for a better user experience because the format of some of my reviews is quite basic.

In that instance i think.its goimg to be a process of copy edits/ additions and re-entering into the new templates.

    Thanks

It depends on what theme you are changing from/to and how you are using Wordpress. If you are just using posts and pages then itīs easy to change the theme, but it you for instance are using a flytonic theme and their review templates, then you need some more manual work to find a solution for reviews on your next theme.

Every CMS has its own rules and as we don't know which platform do you use we can only give you some general tips.
So, in order to transfer the site does not worsen your position in the issuance and traffic, we recommend using the following algorithm:

    • Using Google Analytics, analyze the pages of an online store or website and identify those that brought search traffic.
    • Create a page on the new site with the same URL that was on the old one.
    • Create a table: the left column is the URL of pages from the old site, the right URL is from the new one.
    • To transfer a site from one CMS to another, set up 301 redirects for each page.
    • The next step is to make sure that the content of the pages and the meta tags (Title, description, etc.) are transferred to the new site.
    • Conduct a technical audit of the site: check for identical pages, duplicate content and meta tags.
    • You need to create a 404 error page - it will help to redirect visitors from the old site to the new one.

How to transfer a site to a CMS if you have an online store? In the online store, the main thing is the goods, so you need to take care that the traffic to these pages is preserved.

    • Upload the product list of the old and new site and create a table of them: the current URL is the new URL
    • Then the webmaster sets up the 301st redirect to each product page.

    Hi Mark,

WP theme changes are most probably the easiest migrations I have ever made in my WP sites.

Just change the active theme. Boom you go!

Only check the consistency of the desktop/mobile pages in terms of the design change and then make the modifications if needed.

Just a quick note: Please kindly do not forget to have the backup before you procees with the theme change.

    Cheers!

You would also need to regenerate your image thumbnails - give this plugin a try: https://wordpress.org/plugins/regenerate-thumbnails/

Changing temaplate is not obtained with the site content. If you are not moving to a new domain, all the content you've posted will remain.
