    Default Hide link in status bar

    Hi everyone
    Does someone know a method to hide a link in status bar when you move your mouse over a link? I need a global method that will be applied to all links in my site (not to modify each link separately - hope you understand). I find a method but involve to write code at each link...
    Thanks!

    I am not sure that you can do this in firefox and chrome, but in IE it works.

    Add this script to the page:
    <script language="Javascript">
    function hidestatus(){
    window.status=''
    return true
    }

    if (document.layers)
    document.captureEvents(Event.MOUSEOVER | Event.MOUSEOUT)

    document.onmouseover=hidestatus
    document.onmouseout=hidestatus
    </script>

    I never did it before ... Maybe you can search for event when the status bar is changing ... Then when this event occur you can change it back to ='';
    Free Online Poker Tournaments Widget you can use it in your site with your affiliate links.

    Try jQuery (www.jquery.com), it's a free JavaScript framework designed to write unobtrusive code. You just load it and then add your code and attach it to somethin. It's well documented.

    example:
    Code:
    $('a').mouseover(function(){
      window.status = "Status text";
      // or you could use the text from the title attribute if you have <a href="link" title="link description"...>
      //window.status = $(this).attr('title');
    });
    Be aware that not all browsers allow you to change the status text.

    I think personally that between browser compatability and the need to make a single change as opposed to a sitewide change you will never find a solution.

    Sorry that i cannot add anything remotely like a solution, however, if it saves some time then at least i have helped in the long run.

    I think the very best solution that you will get will be a page wide rather than sitewide change.

    I also cannot understand a need for this solution unless you are trying to direct people where they do not expect to be. I may be wrong, however, would be interested in why you want this solution as there may be a simpler way around it.

    A "solution" that would work for all browsers is to redirect affiliate links. There's a thread about it here in the SEO forum. You know about it because you started it.

    About browser compatibility: I've read about this somewhere, and it seems that Firefox will only allow status text changes if it is enabled (which isn't by default). As it is quite popular, I don't see the point in hiding the links this way, I just gave an example how it could be done.

    I agree with Chalkie, I would never click on a link if I saw it was being hidden.

    Rather use a redirect code if you are trying to hide your affiliate links.

    document.layers

    layers is/was a proprietary element only supported in NetScape DOM's. (Document Object Model).

    The way it is used above is for NS browser detection.

    As mentioned, the best way to hide links is with redirect code.

    Rewards Affiliates does this in their links:

    Code:
    <a href="http://www.somecasino.com" onMouseDown="this.href='http://www.somecasino.eu/affiliate/referral.asp?site=bjb&aff_id=affxxxxx';"
    target="_blank" title="free slots">
    When you mouse over it shows the www but when you click it applies the affiliate link. I have used this as a test with other properties and really not noticed much difference between tags shown and those that do not.

    Sorry that is not a "global fix" you have to do it on each link you want separately.

    That basically removes tracking from all users who don't have JavaScript enabled (few % of internet users). The second problem is that they get backlinks from your site, so there's a good chance someday their casino is outranking your site with the most important keywords.

    Half of the persons that will click on a link don't watch if its being hidden.

    We all agree with Chalkie, but you must think over this. )
