Difficult question. It is not easy to just give one source. There are so many. But a good start can be Yoast. They give good starter tips.

Start with Google Search Console (Webmaster Tools) and link that to Google analytics - Thats an absolute MUST if you are starting to SEO your site.

Secondly install the MOZ toolbar into Google chrome... when its live there is a free page optimisation suggestion tool, when you view a webpage it will show some basic elements that you can optimise for that current page.

Those are the free tools i'd suggest if you're starting out.
