I think it will get you banned. Hidden links are a big nono for search engines. The best links are the links "to" your site not the links "back to" your site. I believe that some engines are now penalising sites for these direct link exchanges. You should keep the links on a page down below 40 otherwise SEs consider your page to be a link farm and downgrade it as a result.
Maybe I misunderstood your project, please tell me if I am wrong about it.
