The purpose of the new gaming regulation is to increase consumer protection. A basic prerequisite for achieving the goals is to ensure that those who engage in gambling activities in Sweden have a license and close out those players who do not have it. The goal is to channel gambling into legal alternatives and minimize the supply of illegal gambling.
As part of our supervisory work, we have sent a letter to payment service providers. We want to emphasize the importance of not passing on bets or profits to and from gaming companies that, without a Swedish license, target the Swedish gaming market.
Unlicensed games can have serious consequences for society, such as increased vulnerability to problem gamblers, the risk of money laundering, lost tax revenue and unhealthy competition.
All games on money provided in or directed to Sweden, including games over the Internet, must have a Swedish gaming license. Payment service providers that mediate bets or winnings to and from gaming companies that do not have a license may be guilty of violating the Gaming Act.
