Time for a change so do I go Samsung or iPhone

Almost all the most popular apps are available on windows, but if there are specific apps you absolutely couldn't live without, you should always check if they are available before changing any platforms no matter which one you are considering.

I just updated my android the other day and my carrier finally enabled the ability to turn off the carrier scan and use strictly wi-fi calling. Before this last update wi-fi calling did not work unless it could connect to a carrier tower.

I guess I should take a week off and go up to the mountains and see how it works....

I've never considered changing until they made it bigger.

Not really enjoying the 6 because its ergonomically rubbish. The screen is too big for you to use the phone with 1 hand the 5 was perfect.

May consider a change if there's a decent phone that is smaller and just as good.

The problem with windows phone is the lack of apps (from what I've been hearing). Maybe it's not true, I wouldn't know because I haven't had one, but I would definitely go for a Samsung, just because I am not a fan of the iPhone.

It could be then that they are using the wrong apps, or not using approved apps.

It also could be due to the changes in the way apps talk to parent servers etc.

I had a fairly long discussion about with with an app developer that works with a server software monitoring group. Basically the old style of the way some apps constantly check a parent server has changed and now it has become more about the parent server pushing out changes to the devices running the apps.

I have one app in particular that I run on both android and windows, and when I do get warnings I get them quicker on the android, but I get less false alarms on the windows device.

(This adds considerable risk to the android risking being thrown out the window at 5am due to a false alarm waking me up just after getting to sleep)

I do see many changes in the way app development is done and many more changes likely coming, and as Microsoft and others that are targeting the app developers continue to improve and update their development tools, I am sure that apps will also continue to improve their feature sets and stability.

I dont remember any of the apps he mentioned except snap chat. But they were all apps that are pretty popular on android and apple phones.

I don't need to spend $600 on a phone - or $100 a month on a mobile data plan to stream cat videos.
How big a phone do you need? How many phone apps do you REALLY need?

Because I have desktops, laptops, and a tablet it means that I use my phone to take calls and/or send messages 90% of the time.
I also take a few pictures on walks or holidays ... and I do some internet browsing for a specific location or item too - but not often.

Regarding apps I have that I actually use :
- email (2-3 times a week)
- football livescore (weekly)
- hotel booking (monthly)
- airline reservation (monthly)
- Zedge for ringtones (once a year?)

I also do have one great holiday app - called WordLens - you hold it up and focus on a foreign sign or paper and it will translate the language between 10 different languages. Never used it for real yet - but tested it on German and French images with amazing success.

So that's it - six apps - and only a couple are even used once a week.

So while I get the idea of staying connected with a phone - the reality is that it is not my main internet connection - nor are any of the apps available good enough to be "must have" items to make my life better.

When I see people carrying an i-toy around, (knowing the cost and plan costs) and then hear them living from paycheck to paycheck, it's just incredible to comprehend that these people can be marketed to and manipulated soooo easily.

IF this is ALSO like you then use your brain and get a cheap mid-tier Android phone for around $100
(or most likely get it free with a 12-month plan - I've yet to pay for an android phone)

Not a very long list of apps Paul, and yet it is 6 TIMES longer than mine.

Unless I count the word search game I put on my windows phone and the bowling game on my android that I installed so I would have something to mess about with on the rare occasion when I am waiting for something or another and wanna wast 10 minutes.

Now I do use the gps/mapping app a bit when I need directions to somewhere I haven't been before etc, but in both cases those are stock apps that came with each phone. I do prefer the Here Maps navigation on the windows device over Google maps on Android as in my tests it seems that Here Maps is a little quicker telling you of upcoming turns or highway lane merges and lane changes etc. (especially in remote and rural areas) The sooner you know you will be making a lane change or turn , the better the navigation app can be.

Beyond that, like Paul I use my phone as a phone, except for a periodic looking something p when I am out and away from my computer.

I think the larger, more bulky phones are more popular among countries that have lagged behind other countries on internet rollout and countries were the penetration of pc's among most households were lower.

Been using iPhone for the last 4 or 5 years. Recently switched to Android and much prefer it, having more control over apps and customizability is a massive plus as is SD card storage.

The chart that Marina posted is the single biggest reason NOT to buy an iPhone....or what someone said recently...n iToy.

This shows that peolle buy stuff for the wrong reason...not based on usability or what it can do or them but based upon reasons such as "because the neighbor has one" or "because Ipple makes a lot of money" or maybe "because it will make me look cool"
