Top Tier Links Like Forbes, NYTimes, etc

In my niche, one of my competitors has backlinks from a number of top tier publications. Here are some examples: Bloomberg, Digital Journal, Forbes, San Francisco Chronicle, Huffington Post, LA times. I've found them obviously buying links before, so I presume that they paid for such links.

This competitors site also dominates the SERPS for a bunch of terms I compete for. Granted, their site is old, authoritative, has tons of user content from a forum, etc, but, I presume that if they found value in pursuing these types of backlinks that I would find value in it as well (at least insofar as leveling the playing field). I also think that my content is superior to theirs in many ways, and that my site is simply not nearly as sophisticated as theirs with regard to SEO, optimization, it's not as old, less links, etc.

Long story short, I want to compete with them more vigorously and one of the ways I'm thinking of doing so is by pursuing links in really big publications like those mentioned. However, to get a gambling related link into one of these sites, it seems like the price tag is something like $3,000 per link. I think most of us would agree that that is quite expensive.

My question is thus. Have any of you gotten links like this in the past and if so, did you think it was worth the price?

You´ll find every day offers for sites like mentioned for much less money.

I guess it is not possible to book for gambling directly but for sure you could add some unsuspicious but related content as a link target.

Try searching in BHW forum, all sellers have feedbacks, the administration supervises purchases.

I was unable to join the FB group (not approved after weeks of waiting?). BHW, I can't seem to find anyone who will accept "gambling links." Does anyone else have any suggestions?

You can always use it for tier links, expensive though for a link that might actually be ignored as this is common practice now

Do you mean building links to other sites and then pointing those at us to pass on some of the juice? Like the beginnings of a PBN?

I'm not exactly sure what you're trying to say. It sounds like you're trying to tell me that search engines might ignore links within articles on huge news sites like those I mentioned. And if that is the case, I have:

1) Have a hard time wrapping my mind around that statement
2) Never heard of such a thing
3) Would love to see a source

Thanks for the article link wonderpunter. You are in fact one of the most helpful people on these forums.

Now, with that said, I read the article and a lot of the comments and I am not convinced of the article's conclusion. One big clue, IMO, is that it is relying on Gary Illyes tweet. However, in his tweet his first statement is basically saying that he thinks it is extremely difficult to get links from these large publications. I used to think the same, as a novice webmaster, but now, after just a little bit of research, I think it is entirely possible to get such links. Assuming one has the money and is willing to spend a little bit of time learning how to spot and track down sourcing.

Whether they have an effect or not is debatable for sure. I'd like to run an experiment on this if for nothing else than to learn the truth!

Was finally able to join with the help of another GPWA'er. While I doubt I'll make much use of this group, it is interesting to see what kinds of things are out there and at what prices. Thanks again GPWA for helping to further my education in the webmaster game!
