    Post Tracking Cookies Overwritten???

    Hi

I am just wondering what it means by Tracking Cookies Overwritten?

Does this mean if i refer a player through my banner and link. Then they format their computer and re-download i won't receive credit for referring them.

I am hoping i am reading this wrong.

You haven't really provided much information - or defined who "it" is - or where "it" said the phrase tracking cookies overwritten.

But here is a basic background on tracking cookies.

It means that affiliate programs use cookies (a small file) to track who send the visitor to the casino / poker room / sportsbook.

Some facts about tracking cookies :
    - People can have browser settings to not allow cookies at all. (No credit)
    - Affiliate programs set cookies to a 14-30 day duration. After that they expire (No Credit)
    - People have programs (NOrtons, Symantec and many others) that frequently delete advertising and tracking cookies. (No Credit)
    - Most programs work on "last click affiliate" - so if the player uses another affiliate link AFTER yours then the cookie is over-written.

However, the whole point of the the cookie is only to tag the player upto the point that they signup and register for an account. Once they have done that then that player should be tagged as belonging to the affiliate that sent them there.

So, once a player account has been tagged as belonging to an affiliate, then it should not matter if afterwards they reformat and re-download, or buy a new computer and redownload, as long as they continue to use the same account login to play.

If the player does decide to re-register as a NEW player and download the software again, then the credit would go to whichever affiliate (if any) had the last valid tracking cookie at the time on that computer.

    I hope that helps.

Good explanation Gooner, and in my opinion it is the most fair way.

The salesman that closes the sale should earn the commissions.

Thanks for that. I have just noticed on some programs it states this:

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • Tracking Cookie Duration:14 days
    • Tracking Cookies Overwritten:Yes, latest referrer receives credit (This is what made me wonder)

This is what i was reading on betting partners review page and wondered what it meant.

Yes - "last referrer" and "last click affilaite" (my poorly worded version) are the same thing.
As Universal4 says ... it is generally accepted that this best rewards the affiliate who "made the sale".

Here are some interesting stats about cookies I've just found:

40 percent said they believe ad-supported websites can sell information about them.
    This is a big misconception.

Sure, some large properties might be compiling and selling a little bit of data, but NONE of it is tied directly to private user details. And any company that sells private user details, is not gathering the data by cookies, but is selling their own compiled private user data of their direct customers.

The companies that do sell their customer data, will likely continue to do so, and may even do it MORE if or when cookies go away or become more restricted by law.
