    Default Website "duplicated" - need help

    Hi,

    I have parked a website to maybe work with it in future. Now I found an other website that has a full copy (two articles lol) of my website. I had a chat with godaddy where the files are hosted and we discovered, that it is not a real copy. - His subdomain is pointing to my dedicated IP.

    That are the statements from godaddy support regarding this issue.
    Well, technically it is not a duplicate, it is your actual content on your server. Because he is pointing his domain to your server there is nothing we can do to stop this as it is not illegal to point your domain to a site you do not own

    For example, if you wanted to point your domain http://www.elitecasinoreviews.com to godaddy.com you can

    That is legal to do
    My site: http://www.elitecasinoreviews.com
    His site: http:// inthez.zeego-mix.com/

    I donīt care if it is legal or not as the support told me. I dont want to see other domains with my content, my "about us" etc.

    Is there anything I can do??? Thanks in advance.

    Can you block via .htaccess so that nothing is displayed (not sure whether possible or not but this is first thing that pops into my mind regarding how I'd handle things)?

    Hello Sergej,

    inthez.zeego-mix.com is a subdomain of zeego-mix.com.

    Look at his picture and maybe write him into his Facebook account, that he is a very tricky thief and has indeed stolen your content, because your content will be displayed on his url without your permission:

    facebook.com/Zeegomix

    ---

    Write an email to him, that you will make public on 25 different places with best Google position, that he is a tricky content thief if he will not remove the pointing. He should write his own content and not publishing (as a copy) yours.

    There is no quick-and-dirty solution. My guess is you're unlikely to get much technical support from GoDaddy so you need to do it yourself. I tried to point you to an answer but the system will not permit a link so have pasted below.
    You should activate name-based virtual hosting and only show your real website for the desired domain names. For all other names, you can display a suitable error message.

    Details: Your webserver is contacted by its IP address. There is nothing you can do to stop that. Anyone can say, "connect to that IP address". For instance, anyone can register new domain names to point to your server's IP address. However, inside the request, there is a field "Host" which can point to a specific domain.

    Upon receiving the request, your server may choose to inspect the Host field and deliver different content depending on that value. In the simplest case, the server ignores the field entirely and always prints out the same content. But in a more sophisticated set-up, so called "name-based (virtual) hosting", the server chooses the content depending on the hostname.
    This is how shared webhosts work: There's a single server, but depending on the requested hostname it spits out a different website for each name.

    Therefore, if you want to tie your server content to your hostname, you have to tell your server to produce your website only for your desired name, and to produce a different (error) website for all other cases.
    In Apache this is trivial to configure, just check their documentation; for IIS I wouldn't know but I imagine it's equally simple.

    If IIS is set up correctly, especially if there are other sites on that IP it would not answer by IP alone, unless the ip is also in the host header on your site speficially.

    I wonder what the outcome would be if you blocked traffic from his name servers, such as in htaccess.

    Hello Sergej,

    the "bad" site is listed in Google. Try the content removal request link from my other post in this thread.

    ---

    Make a copy of your .htaccess and add the following:

    <IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} ^http://.*\.zeego-mix\.com [NC]
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} ^http://zeego-mix\.com [NC]
    RewriteRule ^.* - [F,L]
    </IfModule>

    Maybe it works.

    ---

    Or if possible, redirect/change the content for all referrer from the bad site e.g. to this page: http://vanilla-gorilla.webs.com/

    Thanks so much for all your help.

    @conradcathalmurray
    I read it and googled for more information. If I understand it correctly, the response refers to this: http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/apache-...lhost-example/ Not sure, I created the mentioned lines in httpd.conf, restarted the server but nothing changed. I tried several versions of this configuration but the content always still appears on the other website.

    My website is on apache server with three different websites with one dedicated IP each. So I used "NameVirtualHost *:80" as virtual host name and configured the website as mentioned in the link. Unfortunately no changes.

    In detail, this is what I added to httpd.conf (Btw. I hate putty so much )

    Code:
    NameVirtualHost *:80

    <VirtualHost elitecasinoreviews.com>
    ServerAdmin elitecasinoreviews.com
    DocumentRoot /var/.....
    ServerName elitecasinoreviews.com
    Errorlog /logs/.....
    Customlog /logs/....
    </VirtualHost>
    But nothing changed...

    I also tried to prevent access from his IP via htaccess as Shay/universal4 posted, but I couldnīt make this work either. I tried via IP and nameserver

    @RouletteZeitung
    Thanks for all the information and the great last link

    You could always just stick a canonical tag in your websites code - as the duplicate site is pointing to your site, it would also display the canonical URL, thus giving your site credit.

    Thanks, this is a good option for temporary solution

    To test everything again, I changed the httpd.config to any fantasy data like
    Code:
    NameVirtualHost *:80

    <VirtualHost elitecasinoreviews.com>
    ServerAdmin 453ergtderg.com
    DocumentRoot /435s/.....
    ServerName 45rfdsf.com
    Errorlog /345/.....
    Customlog /4534r/....
    </VirtualHost>
    But the website is still available without any changes So the entered data have no effect and I can enter any fantasy data without any changes. But it is the correct file. I checked this twice.

    I host the domains elsewhere and use offsite dns. So I asked godaddy support where the files are hosted, if this could be the reason why the changes does not have any effect. Their response "We do not support this question"

    Pffffffff

    Blocking the ip in the firewall would disallow any traffic from his server.

    Not sure if you would have to block his dns srvers also, but one option.

    If you don't have access to firewall of any kind on the server level, block his ip in htaccess. Here is the syntax that works for me for blocking an ip in htaccess
    Code:
    RewriteCond %{REMOTE_ADDR} ^xx\.xxx\.xx\.xxx$
    RewriteRule .* - [F]
    The above is assuming that the rewrite engine is on and base url is /

    Peplace the xx with the ip address.

    Thank you, but this does not work too. It seems not to be possible to prevent pointing to the IP via htaccess.

    Funnily enough, when I created the name based virtual hosts, I also added my IPs with "listen" command to hppd.conf. And this made my whole server stop working... I guess I need to hire a professional to have a look at my server and what is going on there...

    You CAN block ip's in htaccess.

    If the person is pulling your content in an iframe though, the browser call for the content will come from the visitor's ip address and not from the the one that did this.

    I took a look at the source code and do not see this being pulled by iframe or any other manner and this appears to be a very clear case of content theft.

    Yes, you are right. I meant, that it seems not be possible to stop him pulling my content via htaccess.

    I made a dns lookup
    His frontpage shows this IP: http://www.dnswatch.info/dns/dnslook...submit=Resolve
    But this is the result of subdomain lookup where my content appears: http://www.dnswatch.info/dns/dnslook...submit=Resolve

    -This is MY IP... So if I wanted to deny pulling my content on this subdomain, I would need to deny my own IP. Using the IP of his frontpage does not change anything.

    So, I already tried to stop him via htaccess, via name based virtual hosts and I recently tried to block him via iptables. Everything was unsuccessful... But it is still not clear to me, why nothing worked ... There must be any way...

    If I will find a solution, I will post it here

    @ Glueck
    Maybe it does not hurt. But would you want me to add your content, your impress, your full site on my domain? I dont think so

    We have had numerous folks do the same thing with our www.casinocity.com or other sites of ours. Although we are not sure, our belief is that it was being done with the idea of aging a domain with our content with the idea that different content would subsequently be placed on the final site.

    The strategy we have followed in such situation was to cause a redirect to be issued that changed the host name of the referencing url to our host name for the site. That worked like a charm from my perspective.

    Technically, I'm not sure exactly how this was implemented. But I can get our tech team to post the details if that additional information would be helpful.

    No matter what the idiot told you at GoDaddy, your content is being republished or pointed WITHOUT YOUR PERMISSION and that is a copyright violation.

    I performed a dns lookup and looking at the SOA records, you should cc any complaints to this contact also.

    That is exactly my opinion. Besides the content that is published without any notice about the copyright holder, he publishes my contact address. And you canīt expect that a "standard" user makes a dns lookup to check if it is his site/content or not. So the visitors will associate his website with me as contact. I canīt believe that this should be legal...

    Hi Sergej,

    For casinocity.com we use a Helicon ISAPI_Rewrite rule (ISAPI_Rewrite is largely syntax compatible with .htaccess) to block anybody from using hostnames other than www.casinocity.com. The solution we use also canonicalizes the site to use www.casinocity.com for SEO benefits. Here's the solution:

    # Redirect non-www to www
    RewriteCond %{HTTP:Host} !^www\.casinocity\.com$ [NC]
    RewriteRule .?(/.*) http://www\.casinocity\.com$1 [R=301]

    With the above rewrite rule any visit to the casinocity.com website that is not using www.casinocity.com does a permanent redirect to www.casinocity.com. Replacing casinocity with elitecasinoreviews (and addressing any potential .htaccess incompatibilities) on your site will nullify the hijacker's ability to "steal" your content.

    The first line says this rule applies if the hostname being used to visit the site is not www.casinocity.com ([NC] = case insensitive test). The second line says do a permanent redirect ([R=301]) to the requested page ((/.*) and $1) at www.casinocity.com.

    Sincerely,
    Alan Yabroudy

    Thanks for posting that Alan, when Michael mentioned you had to combat this occassionally I wondered how you did it.

    I also use helicon so the above code will come in handy if I ever have to deal with such theft.
