What is API

I see on many affiliate sites they offer API? I googled it and have a broad sense of what it is, but what do you use this for in our business?

I don’t really use API, but I did a quick search and I found a link that mentions 5 uses for the Application Programming Interface ( API) http://mashable.com/2010/10/24/innovative-api-uses/

Apparently helps you organise data, for example you can check statistic.
