    Default What To Do NOW?

While we are all running around bannging our heads here, we need to take a step back and look at the Big Picture here:

We are being denied the opportunity to gamble online by our own govt. A govt that passed a law w/o our knowledge or consent. The UIGEA as attached to the Port Security Bill, on a Sat night, at the conclusion of the Congressional calendar. It was "snuck in", knowing the Port Security Bill had to be passed, in the wake of the panic over 9/11.

Another aspect of this situation is that the fact that Antigua won a dispute with the US at the World Trade Organiztion over internet gambling prohibitions. The US lost the dispute, but refused to comply. Despite the fact the US used this same WTO to enforce other countries regarding copyright infringement laws, pirating of dvd's and music cd's by US artists.

The bottom line is that the US broke the rules, not b/c someone is afraid of teerrorists, but b/c of the money. It's always about the Benjamins. Always.

My view is that we, the people, should exercise our power of dissent, to take this to the people and let them know what is happening.

The fact is that this is only one thing in a series of recent events where US govt bureaucrats have taken over our lives in very unhealty ways, while claiming they are doing these things for the "greater good". Haven't we heard this before.

It's time to step forward and make our voices heard. Remember that anyone can play the lottery, go to bingo, or a casino anywhere and gamble. It's not about gambling, it's about gambling online. How many spam emails do you get to view porn, or buy viagra, but they are not stopping that?

It's always about the money they can get. Billions are involved here. Our billions that we can choose to spend however we want.

I think that we can start this off by simply posting on Twitter and Facebook and other Social Media about this. One person can make a difference. Remember, those Middle East uprisings going on right now all started on Facebook - true story.

When others know they are not alone, things happen quickly today, all due to the power of the internet.

Let's use what we have to multiply our efforts.

I've been watching this Protect IP Act fallout. We may have even bigger problems since this passed today:

Good post. I actually blogged about this on my site at http://www.ultimatepokerbonus.com/bl...line-gambling/. I agree it is all about the Benji's and it really is a sad thing what our government is doing. One thing about the WTO ruling, while the US has never paid on the claim, we have granted other concessions to Antigua that noone knows how much has really cost our country.

As far protecting Intelectual Property, the Gov't has to be careful here. This isn't China and we can't allow censorship, however we do need to protect IP to some extent. The private sector can do a lot also here. For example Pfizer spends millions every year taking blackmarket drugs off the market. They actually set up their own stings in order to protect their prodect.

The fact is that the only way to do something.. is to do something. I just feel better doing what I can to protest having a home invasion from some stranger with a personal agenda not benefitting me.

The Patriot Act was a step down a slippery slope, and they know that once a law is enacted, people are unwilling to go against the "powers that be".

I'm not doing anything unethical, and should not be illegal. I have nothing to be ashamed of, and won't be put in a position to beg someone to allow me to spend my money to play slots, or poker, or vp or blackjack.

There are three bingo parlors in my town of 3,000 people! I can go every night of the week and twice on Saturday, but I am not allowed to spen .10 on a poker game? We don't have the lottery in my state, but we sure do have lots and lots of casinos, where I can spend every penny I have if I want. If I do want to play the lottery, I can go 10 miles out of state and play all my money.

So, I'll do what I can and hope others do the same.

Here are a couple of more links regarding the Protect IP Act. One is to a PC World story. The other is to the bill itself. I'm going to spend some time over next couple of day reading this bill so I can write an analysis piece for the GPWA. But I'm not ready to dismiss it out of hand. It "seems" like this could help affiliates that produce original content by giving them a strong legal tool to pursue people who steal content. You could seek a court order to stop payment processors and ad networks from doing business with someone who has stolen your content. In principal, that's a good thing. There are other elements in this bill I'm not sure about. But like I said, I'm going to take some time and really plow through this bill to see what's really in it, and what its impact on webmasters -- and others -- will be.

I'll look forward to it Vin.

IMO it gives the US authorities much more power to block websites and censor the search engines (among other things) in the guise of CR protection. It includes shutting down non US 'rogue' websites as well of course.

Frankly I feel it is alarming indeed to see that kind of power.

Leahy's Protect IP bill even worse than COICA
