Question What image formats do you use on your websites?

Web browsers now support a variety of more modern image formats. All modern formats offer superior compression and quality compared to traditional formats like JPEG and PNG. They also provide better support for color depth and compression, especially with transparency. From a performance perspective, more compression means faster load time.

For this week’s poll I ask what image formats you use on your websites.

In addition to voting in the poll, please share your thoughts about moving toward using the newer formats. Is this something you have done already? Is it something you are planning to do? How much do you think it matters?

    Who created Webp?
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WebP

WebP was first announced by Google on 30 September in 2010 as a new open format for lossy compressed true-color graphics on the web, producing files that were smaller than JPEG files for comparable image quality. It was based on technology which Google had acquired with the purchase of On2 Technologies.
Hmm, googles owns the tech, helped create the tech, wonder if they would rather websites use tech they didn't create.
Google actively promotes WebP, and Google Chrome and all Chromium-based browsers support the format. The proprietary PageSpeed Insights tool suggests that webmasters switch from JPEG and PNG to WebP in order to improve their website speed score.

For small images like logos, i use SVG, and for larger ones like screenshots, WebP. But i strongly believe that Google prefers high-quality JPG and PNG over its own WebP. This is because i've noticed that JPGs and PNGs get indexed way faster than WebP. Often within minutes.

Recently, i tried coding SVGs and created something like a roulette wheel with the ball constantly moving around...lol.

The file size is very small, and you can even include metadata like the title, description, creator, URL, etc. But i haven't found a proper use for this type of images yet. Otherwise, they look great.

I've always been using the same picture formats, which are: JPEG, GIF and PNG.

Nothing beats AVIF if you're into graphics loaded with gradient colors.

Working on integrating AVIF too, noted that google started supporting the format a couple of weeks back too: https://developers.google.com/search...appy-avifriday

Thanks for the tip, Malikbhai! I knew about this format but hadn't tried it before. I just converted a large 1.2 MB PNG image to AVIF. The result was 175 KB, even smaller than WebP, which was 202KB, and looked spot-on when i uploaded it to my WP page.

Usually, when i take a PNG screenshot of a casino page with a lot of small text and convert it into WebP, it becomes blurry.

One solution i found is slightly sharpening an initial PNG image before converting it into WebP, but it adds extra work and the image still looks shite after uploading it to WordPress...

From what i know for PNGs and JPGs you can control WordPress compression through .php with add_filter, but not for WebP.

But with AVIF i simply converted the image and all looked clear and readable without extra steps.

Will look into it more now as Chatbots scream that AVIF is perfect for large detailed images but i still need a fallback version and some web browsers may not support them. Hopefully, it's just old AI BS, lol

"Mostly sticking to the classics like JPEG for regular images and PNG for anything that needs a transparent background. Lately, I've been adding more WebP for the combo of quality and faster load times.

For me it's SVG for smaller icons, JPG and WEBP for regular images. Don't actually use PNG.

I use SVG, PNG for logos, JPG for screen shots but as soon as I get the bug fixed with nextjs ill use the image optimization that converts to modern formats in the correct size for viewports.

I actually use all formats with an emphasis on size. That is, I make sure that the size of the images in terms of volume is as small as possible.

Despite what I wrote, I try to use the WebP format.

I mostly use PNG, though, I'm thinking about WebP format as well. Want to conduct some small investigation to determine the actual winner for me.

I use JPEG and PNG because I think that GIFs and other moving images will make users wary and less likely to click on them.
