When did you register your first domain?

According to the whois info, my earliest domain (fiction-net.co.uk) was registered on 06 November 1999. It seems like ages ago and I still felt like a latecomer to the scene. I couldn't imagine starting from scratch now with no previously knowledge.

1999, it was an angelfire domain, a free one actually and ha ha I just bought my first HTML 4.0 book. It had pictures and examples and I was very much into a game from Microsoft called Age of Empires and I decided to make a site.

I remember I was very excited about being about to put "music" as the page opened and some animated fire animations as .gif . First big one was in 2006, thanks to partners that did not take it seriously, the project failed but it started so well and promising.

Another failure back in 2007 with another domain, very much for the same reasons, and this one that I have now is since 2009.

I think starting a domain these days is certainly easier than it was back in 1999. With the likes of Wordpress and Youtube tutorials on how to build a website, the barrier to entry has certainly been lowered. The marketplace is obviously much more competitive than it used to be and that's the challenge we all face. Finding the open niche is usually the hardest part. Needless to say my first domain registration was 2011

The first ever domain I bought was in 2004, although I didn't really do anything with it other than use it for personalised email. I then went on a mini buying spree in 2006, but still didn't really do anything with any of the domains. It was actually 2010 when I actually started making websites, so I'm a total noob really.

First domain I registered was nearly to the day in 2007, directphotographers.com. Thank goodness I never went down that route!

Mine was circa 1999, I had a site called newwelshmusic.com - it died a few years after and I let it drop. The oldest existing one I have with content on is from March 2003, a personal blog.

I bought an even older domain on Digital Point a few years back when the prevailing theory was older domains meant better rankings. I've never done anything with it though as it's pretty useless keyword wise. It was registered in 1996 and has never dropped. If anyone can think of a use for ppmc-bms.com give us a shout.

My first idea was something along the lines of Pretty Powerful Motor Cycles - BMS and doing an eBay affiliate site with BMS bikes. Never got around to it.

Thinking now, BMS could be Brilliant Mobile Slots. Maybe PPMC could be Play! Play! More Coins! lol.

Yes and no. The domain I had probably wouldn't do me much good as it's been parked. However, if it's an old domain that has had semi-regular content added to it all the time, relevant to what you need, then I think yes, it will give you a bit of a push, as long as nothing nasty is in the domain's history. IMO - never really tested it, but have taken over older sites that have done well in the past.

Older domains are valuable only because of the inlinks is what I've heard. It's not the age itself that is valuable.

Bought my first one in 2004 and bought so many that year i was ill from the fee the next year .

Also bought an older domain from 2000 for $150 - haha got that on the CAP forum

Nowadays im selling domains when i can - especially poker ones that i had great intentions for but not enough time - i guess so many have that issue

Ive dropped some valuable ones as well - at the time i did not realise it - especially in the bingo market - but yeah - you live and learn

According to whois my first domain (cyborsex.com) was registered on the 31st October 1999. I still use it for email to this day, but it is no longer a site.
