It couldn't because it's inherently flawed in that aspect, it's deflationary and operates at the same principle as gold (limited supply). The number of bitcoins is finite.

The price varies too much and probably always will. As opposed to trusting euro will have pretty much the same value every day, you can't do so with gold or with bitcoins. They're assets, not currencies. Bitcoin has an intentional price variation and doesn't target the stability of euro or dollar.
