windows update font issue

If you have recently run windows update (second week Feb 2015) and now see that your fonts are messed up there is a slight issue with one of the updates.

This has predominantly affected Windows Server 2003 SP2 and Windows Vista, but during my research I have seen a few people talking about seeing the issue on some installs of Server 2008 also.

A few people have also talked about this affecting a few versions of XP as well as embedded XP and those on some POS systems, although Microsoft has not confirmed this.

The update that is KB3013455 also known as MS15-10

From what I have read so far, I am not sure if it replaces the font as much as it affects the smoothing/display of the font.

I have personally witnessed this issue and have rolled back the update on one server and can verify that removal of the above listed update has fixed the issue on the affected server.

It appears there is a patch for those affected by this, but it does not appear they fixed the actual update.

I have not yet had time to read up on this patch or test it yet, I originally was affected by this update bug on the mail server so I will have to dedicate a box I can recreate the issue first, and then run the patch to see if it fixes it.

I have no intention of using the mail server to test this but will report back when I get the opportunity. Again, those who do see this, just uninstall the above listed update and it should fix the problem in the short term.

Since this was a security patch I do have intention of looking at the workaround.

Rick, I thought you are talking about Google Fonts service that I use.
Just checked, it works great now. They have 671 font families available and I use some of the nice clean fonts families on my sites.

No Gamer, this affects the fonts on local workstations and servers after running the listed update. this has so far affected some installs of Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, as well as some of the embedded Windows XP and POS installs.

It has been stated that this has affected only some applications, depending on what fonts they default to internally, so it could be a far reaching issue, thankfully the uninstall of the update has seemed to work so far for most of what I have read.

I think Windows 8 and 9.1 are not affected.
