I think WordPress is still a perfectly viable option for affiliate sites. The platform itself is probably less important than how well the site is built and maintained.
A custom site can give you more control over speed, structure and technical SEO, but it doesn't automatically mean better rankings. A well-optimized WordPress site with good content, fast loading times and a clean user experience can still perform very well.
For me, I would only move to a custom solution if WordPress was actually limiting what I wanted to build.

Yes to WP, especially with a lightweight theme like GeneratePress. But there's a couple of gotchas if you ever automate the publishing side. On GeneratePress the per-post layout settings cannot be read or written over the REST API, so scripted pages land on the default layout and someone has to fix them by hand. GenerateBlocks also writes its block CSS to a per-post file rather than inline, so pasting a block's markup into a different post gives you an unstyled block.

WordPress is not a real SEO issue on its own. The problems that I have seen usually arise due to the poor technical configuration of overly complex plugins/themes, slow hosting, JavaScript and so on, but not because of WordPress itself.
In general, I would recommend using WordPress unless you have any particular reasons to implement your own solution. In case of an affiliate site, the good caching, CDN, optimized templates, and speed of pages are more important than the content management system itself.
