Here's a few more plugins I have found useful.

Contact Form 7 - Can combine with Captchas and file uploads if necessary

Really Simple Captcha - Use with above contact form plugin

Event Calendar - Really easy to use, appointment and full day options etc

WP-PageNavi - Just a neater version, in my opinion. Have page numbers rather than Next and Previous

Sociable - Tried a few of the social bookmarking ones and liked this one the best

Smart YouTube - super easy to use

Ninja Affiliate - great for adding/cloaking affiliate links etc. Yes this is a pay one and at $97 it's not cheap, however, you are free to use it on any WP installations you own so if you have a few it is well worth it. That is my affiliate link, or you can sign up at Clickbank and use your own link.

Now, what I am after is some way to easily import a datafile (eg csv) into WordPress. The few I have looked at so far don't quite cut it. Any suggestions?

I'm new to wordpress as well , just started yesterday, and would like to know about what might be the best plugin for a stat counter.

I've just moved onlinecasinoblues.com from blogger to wordpress and see that thing are entirely different , but so far I like what I see . (got a loooong ways to go...)

    Any advice would be appreciated.

It tells you everything about your visitors, as it is happening. Brilliant

Yes, WP can be awesome. You can make beautiful, easy-to-run sites. And SEs do, indeed, love them.

I use /%postname%/ and that's it. I like to keep it simple, and not clutter it. I've never posted the same thing twice...if you think that might happen, then maybe don't do it that way.

I like the Google XML Sitemaps plugin, and the WP Auto Tagger.

Auto Tagger checks your post against a Yahoo API and determines related keywords to your post...then makes those as Tags for your post. All this is automatic. Remember, each Tag is its own 'page' in the eyes of the SEs, so one post with 15 tags becomes like 16 pages to Google. If you're tracking your landing pages, you'll find that some visitors are coming in through your tag pages directly, based on their search phrase.

How does a person make a page NOT show up in the navigation bar at all ? I don't want everything I write to have a parent or a nav. bar that ends up being a mile long.

This is stumping the heck out of me .

    Have a look here:

This bit looks the ideal answer there:

    Open ..root/includes/post-template.php
Go to around line 287, it has a built-in option to exclude page from sidebar. Just add your post ID where it says

exclude’ => ‘YOUR POST ID HERE’,

This way you can hide the page from sidebar or menu but anyone can still access to the page.
