Default World Cup fuels 21% revenue increase in French online gambling

France's success at the 2018 FIFA World Cup helped drive huge gains in online sports betting revenue.

ARJEL, the French regulator, reported last week that there was 21% year-on-year increase in online gaming revenue during the third quarter of 2018, which coincided with the latter stages of the World Cup. Total gross gaming revenue grew to €271 million, with sports betting reporting a 40% jump in revenue to €149 million. During the World Cup, which France won for the first time since 1998, the average number of active accounts per week for the sports betting was up 84% to 553,000 accounts.

Overall, a total of €995 million was wagered online in the three months to the end of September, compared to €549 million in the corresponding period last year.

Horse racing grew 4%, while the online poker market, aided by the pooling of liquidty with Spanish and Portuguese markets, grew 3% thanks to a 13% increase in cash game stakes.
