2 link or not to link

The topic of linking has come up quite a bit in the private forums and we felt we should add the information here for all the beginners so they get off on the right foot.
Here are some quick Do's and Dont's as far as linking to other websites.

DO'S

1) Only link to websites with content related to gambling. Links from sites unrelated to your topic will most times hurt more than help.

2) Suggest to the other link partner that they submit their link page to the SE's on a regular basis. (A link has no value if the search engines cant find it)

3) Always reciprocate. When a website links to another it counts as a vote. when the companion website links back it counts as 2 votes for each site! Basically doubling the link value. Plus its the cool thing to do.

4) Include a description. Its been found that the description in the surrounding text is sometimes taken into account in the link formula.

5)NEW - Seperate your link pages. Some SE's are now ignoring pages that have over 49 external links on them because they are identifying them as link farms. No - not a link from Yahoo but perhaps a link from a regular website. Separate your pages as pg1, pg2, etc.... with 40 links or less on each page. This will give each individual link on the page a greater value.

6) Swap front page links?? I would say a link is better than no link but a link from the front page of a high ranking quality site is the best. Link pages dont usually get as high a ranking as a index page therefore links from index pages carry more weight.

7) Make sure your link at Yahoo-DMOZ-Looksmart gets indexed. Its a fact that links from Yahoo, DMOZ, and Looksmart carry more weight than a traditional link with the SE's. Again - it doesnt work in your favor if the SE's dont know about it.

DONTS

1) DO NOT use a linking community like "links to you" or anything like it. Although the idea of instantly having thousands of links pointing to your site may seem attractive "links to you" may very well be identified as a link farm by the SE's (they are aware of it) and get you BANNED. And you do not want that to happen. In addition you probably wont get alot of "relevent" links out of the program anyway. Even the industry specific link trade orginizations run the risk of getting branded as link farms. I wouldnt link to anyone who uses them and most other experienced webmasters wont as it might hurt their own sites rankings.

2) DO NOT use Zues or other reciprocal link software programs. Again - in addition to placing more than 49 links on a given page the program could be identified as a link farm. The automated link requests it generates for you are ignored by most webmasters anyway.

3) DO NOT link to sites with content that is not relevent to your own. At least dont link to "pages" that dont match your own in content. If nothing else in most cases it will drag your ranking down and make it harder for your relevent links to work in your favor.

I'd just like to add a further do/don't

Always use standard HTML for your links and NOT javascript. Jscript will not be tracked by the SE spiders so is totaly worthless for recipricol linking.

Something I consider VERY IMPORTANT, maybe in 1st or 2nd place is include KEYWORDS "IN" your link.

So don't ask for people to link to "yourcasinoname.com" but "Casino, Sporstbook, Poker" etc....

Well what can I say? This is my first visit to these forums and Ive just so far read this one message. This is great advice for anyone. I have been a professional webmaster for a year now and I totally agree with the statments DVS has made here!

I do have one query for you though DVS do you count 'links manager' as a reciprocal link software program? The reason I ask is because I have noticed a number of gambling portal webmasters using the program and they have very high link popularity indeed and in addition do seem to rank very well on search engines, so what makes you think SE are deducting points for letting another program take care of your links? I dont use the software myself as I think its overpriced for what it does.

Also if anyone wishes to exchange links with my site please visit I edited as you see I now use Linksmanager

http://www.online-casinos-poker-blac.../add_link.html for linking information. I think I have one of the fastest growing gambling related directories at the moment.

No - As long as the link manager pages reside on your server you should be fine. I myself use link manager at Best Online Casino Directory. Link manager is more an automated system for maintaining links - not getting links - like a linkstoyou. In fact - my link manager pages have a pretty decent google ranking considering they are link pages. Another thing I like about LM is the fact that there is only 15 or 20 links to a page. The less links on a page the more imprtance each individual link is given.
I would recommend LM to anyone. As a friend said to me recently (like EZ has any friends :LOL: ) best $20 I spend every month.

The most important thing to take into account when exchanging links is how "important" the search engine finds your link partners to be. For example, you could exchange links with 200 gambling-related websites that are not high-ranking on the particular search engine, then create an identical website linking to only 10 high-ranking link partners, and the second website would get a higher ranking. Another example is my own website located at http://www.bestcasinos.5u.com, which is ranked #4 on Google for "Casino Affiliate Programs". My website currently has around 70 link partners, while the other websites who rank #1-3 and #5-10 have 1000-2000 link partners. How did I get up in the rankings with them if I've only exchanged links with 70 partners? Its because quality counts more than quantity, I've exchanged links with only high-ranking websites on Google that are all gambling/affiliate program-related. Hope this helps.

Why would one want to be exclusively linked to other high ranked sites instead of being linked to other high ranked sites ........ plus lower ranking sites?

Hi, I'm new to these forums, having read the original post there are a few points that I'm not sure I understand or agree with. (I have made the assumption that your post is related primarily to google ranking as it is by far the most important, if not forget everything I am about to say.)

Not sure what you mean, are you talking about inbound or outbound links or both.

If in the second half of this sentence you are talking about inbound links then I have to disagree in my experience it is pretty irrelevant whether a site is gambling related or not. High PageRank and keywords in link text is what matters. ie. a link from a PageRank 7 site about gardening with casino in the link text is a hundred times better than a link from a PageRank 4 site about casinos with gardening in the link text.

In my experience if google can't find your website automatically without submitting it, then that link isn't even worth having for ranking benefit.

I disagree completely, I think a one way link to you is much better, firstly you don't give any PageRank back and secondly a reciprocal link seems to me like you are just linking for the sake of search engine success and search engines are probably sophisticated enough to detect this.

This is usually true just by the nature of people linking to the homepage of the site, therefore making it more important. However a link from a higher PageRank internal page is better regardless, as google ranks web pages and not websites.

I don't understand what you mean here, how can you influence these getting indexed?

I disagree, I don't think google places anymore importance on DMOZ or Yahoo listings. However a Dmoz listing is good as it gets links from hundreds of other websites who use Dmoz data, whether google discounts these though I'm not sure.

Hey, my partner and I JUST launched a new site. . . about 2 days ago. We are currently in the link process and I have read a lot about linking, google SEO, etc. DVS did a great job summarizing everything I read. Google basically assigns "votes" per link with a basic formula: PGRNK/LNKS per page. So, linking to a very low pagerank site with over 100 links probably doesn't really do much. Prioritize and go for the big guys first so you make your time the most efficient. Could some of you please visit our new site and tell us if we should change/add/remove anything. Any quick comments would help a lot. We've seen the site so much that it has become hard to criticize. It is Casino Sage, and we are currently looking for link partners, so please visit our links page if you are interested. We will be separating the link pages by about 40 per page as DVS suggested to ensure that you get the best link quality possible.
