In cases where the site is a blog that webmasters are dating their publish dates, this will sometimes be an indication.
You can also look at domain creation dates as sometimes this will be an indication....(IE: if a site is only 6 months old and the original content has been up a year, it's a good indicator)

This could end up being an interesting discussion.

I would like to hear more thoughts on this also.

Publication date can easily be changed or claimed to be intentionally falsified. What about any auto postings of the article to an RSS feed / Twitter / Facebook page? Though I'd say the problem here isn't just proving the original publisher's publication date, it's proving that it was not possible that the copier could have posted it before then.

    Hello,

    content thieves...

Too lazy to think for themselves. Too lazy to write itself. Ethical vacuum packed. No character, no decency and want to reap the seeds of others.

That does not happen by accident. There are no excuses.

Content thieves steal always in bad faith.
    No?

Then they are dumber than dirt.

I'd def be in favour of more frequent action being taken against content thieves by operators and programmes. Acknowledge that the definitive proof can be tricky to find so its likely that previous conduct and reputation of the affiliate would likely play some part.

In all the conversations we have with conscientious, active affiliates, decent original content is always at the top of their list. We've been trying hard lately to provide content ideas, suggestions and press releases etc because we recognise that often original content can be expensive for affiliates to get, either in terms of their time or their money. Only right that we should back this up with some action if affiliates can show us that their hard work has been stolen.

    Glad that got sorted.

I did some research and could not find any tools that prove when text content was originally published.

I did find this nifty tool though:

Probably webmaster tools can do the same thing for you... I'm not an expert.

Content theft is for weak individuals with no drive to actually write their own stuff, or put their energy into something unique

You dont need to use copyscape. Just put a paragraph or two of your article into Google and see what sites it returns.

Yes Google is much better than Copyscape, I have picked things up using G that Copyscape didn't

You should thank him for copying the promo code as that is the kind of info we need to prove that the content is yours. Can you email me some kind of confirmation that this code is yours?

Copying content would help the "thieves" but hurt them too.
In my experience, emailing them and asking the content be removed and the practices brought to a stop helps.

I've been signed up to updates from Hubspot.com for a while and find a lot of their mailers useful or thought provoking.

Received one today regarding preventing content theft with a slideshare that I thought I'd share with you in case it offers any new ideas...
