Backlink will always be part of SEO. Yes it is important, but just like anything else backlink is just one of those few ranking factors in SEO. Its importance is unique like everything else, without it SEO is not well established. IMO.

I have a site that's about a month old and it ranks on page 2 for a few keywords with the term "odds checker" in. Which surprised me because it's basically x amount of links from oddschecker and then my website.
I think with fresh content (whether you're updating an exiting page with a new paragraph of content, rewriting a page all together or adding a completely new page) you will be indexed quite high for a while. The pages in question are very thin and because the site is new my honest assessment would be that they're low quality pages and really shouldn't be that high up. If I landed on them I'd leave - that simple. I don't deserve to be where I am for some of them. But it seems the emphasis on fresh content is bolting them up the rankings. I expect without backlinks and regular updates to them these pages will naturally slide backwards in the rankings to where they ought to be.
So I'm all for backlinks playing a role so long as they're from relevant sources. The problem I see with removing backlinks as a ranking factor is that it won't stop thin pages with poor content getting to the top. In fact, if you removed links as a factor I'm confident that I'd bolt up the rankings even further because my on-page is decent.
Just about every ranking factor can be gamed, whether it's links, social indicators or content itself. Get rid of backlinks as a factor and people will look at shady ways to deceive google on some other aspect
In my point of view backlink is still useful but it should be relevant and backlink from high authority sites.
I really have trouble believing that good content is the key to SEO, or that it will ever be. In my experience it nevered worked, it`s just a fairytale. Mat Cutts says a lot of thinks, few actually prove true. I think most of the things he says are bluffs and means to make google look good.
I would be the first to jubilate if backlinks wouldn`t matter and content was king, but it`s not the case. You need a good indexed website and only than can content help. But you can write the best content out there, without some links you have no chance.
I think that backlinking done right, with quality links, is still the way to go. I do agree that quality links are more important nowadays than quantity links. Much more important.

COntent - When you say content, its about bounce rate, this is how google track the quality of your content.
Backlinks - i prefer link which can drive traffic to my website, im sure google count better this kind of links (banners, images also)
While there has been argument that backlink doesn't work as effective as last time, from what i see, majority of websites still depends on it with good results. Of course, you would also want to focus on other method such as social media and few good domains of yours, etc. to improve your overall ranking.

peternorsk - like you said, it is not about backlinks only, but backlinks are part of bigger picture (domain authority, url authority, CTR, engagement on the site etc etc..)

Backlinks - Yes
Individual IPs - Yes
Quality Links - Yes
Quanity of Links - No
If you want to break into the top 20 for a competitive keyword you have to have some links - presently a FACT! MOZ have studied over 15,000 variant queries to test this out recently and all in the top 50 had at least 1 link and those in the top 20 had more.

As major search engines stated many, many times you should get "good quality backlinks naturally". In few words, our "users" have to link back us with a "competitive keyword" anchor (i.e.: Hey I found a Casino Bonuses website and I like it") in high authority websites.
For what is my experience... how many users would do this? I have seen... uhm... two? Maybe three? And in our niche?
Pretty fantastic, or not?
Just take a look on G and check backlink profiles for the sites that "pop up" on top 20... Ehr... who is lying who?
Sorry,
Some user in this thread know nothing about seo.
