backlinks from subdomains

Do backlinks from subdomains carry the same weight as those from the main domain of a site? e.g. xxx.com vs news.xxx.com?

If you are talking about internal weight, then no.
If there are no links to the subdomain from the main domain, then it does not transmit anything to it at all. Just count the number of links from the main domain to the subdomain.

My experience is that subdomain links are worth far less than links from the main domain.

look at the subdomain metrics in isolation. there may still be huge value... just not so much inherited from parent (gone are the days of setting up a parasite host on wordpress to "inherit" some authority.. you will only inherit some authority if parent domain links to pages on subdomain )

No, but of course if the subdomain has some awesome links that will count. So it can give you positives, depending on the links that the subdomain already has.
