    Unhappy Calvin Ayre Indicted

    In case you haven't heard:

Federal prosecutors in Baltimore on Tuesday unsealed an indictment against Calvin Ayre, the former Canadian billionaire who founded Bodog, one of the world’s biggest online gambling firms. Ayre is accused of operating an illegal gambling business involving sports betting and conspiring to commit money laundering.

Technically speaking he did nothing wrong since he moved Bodog.com to a .eu domain quite a while ago. It remains to be seen whether the Canadian government is going to hand him over to the US government to face the music. To be honest at this stage I can't see it happening.

I saw on Fox that Calvin and 3 others were indicted. I wonder who the others are?

This could have something to do with the USA and future regulation. They are doing a clean up of brands that market to US players now and in the past.

Technically Canada has to arrest and extradite him according to treaty. It's possible that a Canadian Judge can refuse the request, but the current government is a "Law and Order" bunch who are unlikely to show Calvin any sympathy. Look up "Mark Emery", a man who canadian prosecutors couldn't get sent away for more than a few months at a time. They happily shipped him off the US to spend 5 years in prison for selling pot seeds.

Unless...he's prepared to "tip" the right people. I heard that the US/Canadian relationship is pretty strained at the moment.

I think most observers would say that the Harper Government is the most pro-US government since brian Mulroney maybe even since before Trudeau took over and went to protectionism for both Canadian business and culture in 1968.

My hope is that at the very least he can make a deal like the poker folks got (pay 1/3 of the money you made, min. security prison for 6-18 months), but with sports betting more clear cut he may not get as good of a deal. Ultimately, i think he'd be best off just staying away from the US and Canada.

Calvin's reaction has been pretty predictable, kind of a "let the adventure begin" philosophy in the post i read by him.

Online Poker has always been a grey zone in US. No real laws against it. Sports betting has been illegal since the wire act and DOJ has been enforcing it for many years. Its not precisely the same situation. Definitely will be harder to get off that one, plus he also has money laundering conspiracy. That alone might land him in jail for a few years.

With all of his fortunes I am sure he can find a non-extradition location to hold up in and only travel to others so he can't get nabbed and sent back. I guess his parties at the affiliate conferences will be affected. No 51st party in Dublin.

Is he actually doing his own laundry, or is he just sitting on the machine waiting for the spin cycle?

Puting all the fun aside, The last remaining US giant is going to court. There is no reliable poker network in US, no large reliable sportsbook, and casinos come and go on a daily basis. If gambling gets legalized, large Vegas players will mopolize the market without the real need of affiliates, or at least with far worse terms and payouts.

So I am asking, what are your thoughts on the future of the US market for affiliates?

    Default Liberals (Demons) Suck!

Liberals suck! Visit my website, "EatMeLiberals" if you want to save your freedom. We are in for far more difficult times as these demons, (liberals) establish more rules for your every action. I know exactly what I would do if I didn't have children and wasn't concerned about repercussions. I'm sure someone will eventually be our hero. I'm still waiting. If you think of them as demons then you will prevail in your quest to destroy them. I know it seems contradictory since we are talking about gambling. There is a much bigger picture at stake. They are concerned with destroying lives on a much larger scale. They will destroy our country and take away ALL of our freedoms.
