    Default Cancun, just in case

Saw this on g911. I've only been to Mexico once and had a great time. Thought this was worth passing on..

    1. Do not venture outside the resort.

    2. Stay in large groups of 4 or more people.

    3. Stay in large groups of 4 or more people.

    4. Do not wear expensive jewelry and/or clothing and, if asked by locals where you are from, tell them Canada.

    5. Do not wave to gun toting troops that will be awaiting you at the airport and along roadsides en route to Cancun.

It's unfortunate, but true. There are major drug/cop wars going on in mexico, especially near the US border, with guns bought in the US. Cancun is not near the border, but the story is that the Mexican federal government sent this retired general to Cancun to investigate police corruption. he was assassinated his first night in town and the police chief was arrested.

My friends are supposed to come home tonight from cancun and were just there a couple months ago. They didn't seem too concerned heading out this time, because they stay inside the resort.

911 loves to blow lots of smoke, from very small fires and even they say it's not a very likely danger to the conference.

It is a shame that steps need to be taken when visiting any country to ensure security and common sense should always be used

But i must confess i do tend to ignore it on occasions, i love nothing more than sitting in a local pub with the locals drinking the local brew,

There are parts of England that even as an Englishman i would not venture alone at night wearing bling, its identifying these areas beforehand that is essential.

I cannot believe that there are not parts of Mexico or any country (few exceptions of course) where as a westerner you cannot go and be completely safe.

I would probably take the chance myself to go to a local restaurant and so forth, surely the hotel manager or resort manager can advise you or even the local consulate

But that said people should take as much security precautions as they see fit

I guess it's true at many places. At Mardi Gras we were warned to stay inside the quarter.

In Vegas my friend got his wallet pick-pocketed. He caught the guy immediatly luckily or that really would have been a bummer! He ran but not before my friend clunked him on the head.

I don't think tourist places want their tourism industry jeopardized so they step up precautions. Good to know what's going on at your destination. Stay safe!

    Hmmmm....

Methinks this might be about time for JTodd's little "toursts destination" story...LOL

Not that it is totally funny....because it isn't...but we can be happy that he wasn't permanently injured....and came of it ok in the end....

I remember being out talking a walk that evening and seeing the emergency crews aroiund the time you had said it took place but had no idea what had been going on until the stories started circulating the next day or sao after that....
