I just got a message through the GPWA contact us form containing the URL http://xxx.pokerbandits.ca/hoax.html (and that was ALL the message contained). There is a message at that URL fessing up to the fact that this was a hoax. The page reads as follows:

We apologize to all for any inconvenience that may have resulted by our recent hoax, however we found it necessary to perpetuate given the current state of online poker in the United States. We believe a much needed scrutiny is required of the recently passed Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. Not only does this bill violate the constitutional rights of US citizens but also facilitates the US government to unilaterally withhold funds of online poker players and make arrests of foreign payment processors. We strongly disapprove of the Internet Gambling Enforcement Act and actively encourage all our users to sign up with the Poker Players Alliance. For those users who were inquiring, PokerBandits.ca will be re-launched later this week.

Regardless, here's the story I've posted on Casino City. They actually e-mailed me directly in response to my story. They have yet to respond to how this hoax will provide "much needed scrutiny" to the UIGEA, though ...

Pokerbandits.ca admits to hoax

The operators of pokerbandits.ca, whose operators claimed on Monday that the Web site had been shut down by the U.S. Department of Justice, the FBI and the Canadian government, announced that those claims were a hoax on Tuesday night.

"We apologize to all for any inconvenience that may have resulted by our recent hoax, however we found it necessary to perpetuate given the current state of online poker in the United States," read the pokerbandits.ca Web site on Tuesday night. "We believe a much needed scrutiny is required of the recently passed Internet Gambling Enforcement Act."

The operators also announced that pokerbandits.ca would be re-launched later this week.

Actually, this looks much more like a ridiculous publicity stunt perpetrated by a new website to get their name out there and drum up some business. Jerks - I'll remember that site name when they come rolling around for links.
