Default The days are numbered for Flash

    http://www.theverge.com/2016/5/15/11...ash-later-2016

Google has been trying to kill flash for a while, but they have now stated clearly their timetable for how long sites have to get away from flash.

From the article: "Only 10 sites would have Flash enabled by default — the "top 10 domains using Flash," to avoid annoying people with too many prompts. Those include YouTube, Facebook, Yahoo, Twitch, and Amazon. But they'll only have a one year exemption. After that, it sounds like they'll have Flash blocked by default, just like everyone else."

So it's an annoyance factor, rather than a security matter.

it's a resource hog, old outdated tech which runs badly on mobile phones.. nothing worse than locking up your overclocked i7 on a news site waiting for flash to load up

I'm in the process of redesigning my main site and removing all things Flash. Not easy but it needs done to allow better viewing on mobile.

I think it is both an annoyance factor as well as a security issue.

In Google's eyes, they can trust those 10 sites, but they feel they are doing so much for the internet to kill flash since there are security issues that Adobe has had to constantly fix. The big security issues with flash come from sites Google doesn't trust.

I do not agree with their thinking across the board but I do understand a portion of the concept.

However, if flash is so bad they should NOT give special consideration to Facebook, or any of the other big boys they think they can trust. Since the sites named have such a large marketshare, I think the potential for risk is just as great with them since some of the bad actors utilizing flash hacks with at least try and get more coverage there.

In the end, these moves may reduce that flash attack vectors since more people will have to allow flash on sites still using it and it may mean more will just not allow it.

I also agree on the resource statements, flash will hose a browser session faster than just about anything.

You can get some amazing quality now with HTML5, which offers faster load and support across all "modern" devices too.
