Question Do you plan to make changes to your sites to reflect the evolution of nofollow?

A week ago, on September 10th, Google announced that is was introducing new attributes beyond nofollow to identify the nature of links in a post in a blog post:

Google Webmaster Central Blog: Evolving “nofollow” – new ways to identify the nature of links.

Before rel=nofollow" was used to indicate a link is paid, sponsored, user-generated content, untrusted or otherwise not endorsed.

According to Google, the following options are now available:

    • rel="sponsored": Use the sponsored attribute to identify links on your site that were created as part of advertisements, sponsorships or other compensation agreements.
    • rel="ugc": UGC stands for User Generated Content, and the ugc attribute value is recommended for links within user generated content, such as comments and forum posts.
    • rel="nofollow": Use this attribute for cases where you want to link to a page but don’t want to imply any type of endorsement, including passing along ranking credit to another page.

A special thanks to PokCas for first noting this change in the GPWA forums in the following post:

    Google changes for 'Nofollow' links

So, for this week's poll I ask if you expect to make any changes to your site to reflect this evolution in nofollow. Be sure to also post why you plan or don't plan to make any changes, and your views on the change.

    Thanks,

I don't trust Google and I don't know how it plans to rank content with the new sponsored & UGC attributes. I can't imagine Google ranking a page higher because it changed some links from rel="nofollow" to rel="sponsored"

Google said it's not necessary to update the current nofollow tags to sponsored, so I won't put work into this.

I wouldn’t trust Google either. They have been having a lot of issues lately for people and affecting their online businesses.

The following statement was made in the Google Webmaster Blog article I referenced in the initial post in this thread:

No. If you use nofollow now as a way to block sponsored links, or to signify that you don’t vouch for a page you link to, that will continue to be supported. There’s absolutely no need to change any nofollow links that you already have.
