I've been working closely with a link builder who has delivered great results for my businesses in the last 12 months. He swears against put any rel tags at all. He advised us to remove all of ours and we saw an increase in rankings. This was before he had even done anything for us.

The last time I removed them, my site sank like a rock in the serps. Besides, Wikipedia makes extensive use of them, so I will keep them until Google makes them obsolete.

Maybe it's just a way for the big G to clear a few sites from the scene. Just my thoughts.

For me its clear. Google cant find a way to understand the webmasters that try to manipulate rakning by using backlinks. And they ask directly of the webmasters to do it. I believe it is a very expensive information to give it for free.

Maybe google can remove 1-2 adds in return to that.

Affiliate links would fall under sponsored.

From the Official Google Webmaster Central Blog email (have bolded the relevant part):

rel="sponsored": Use the sponsored attribute to identify links on your site that were created as part of advertisements, sponsorships or other compensation agreements.

rel="ugc": UGC stands for User Generated Content, and the ugc attribute value is recommended for links within user generated content, such as comments and forum posts.

rel="nofollow": Use this attribute for cases where you want to link to a page but don’t want to imply any type of endorsement, including passing along ranking credit to another page.

There is a lot of good content linked with nofollow and a lot of trash with follow links, The algo is a lot more precise than before in reading quality content, so my guess is this weighting will be turned up allowing sponsored and nofollow quality content to get a boost.

This could go in a lot of different directions ( and probably will ) as it roles out, then gets tweaked and modified. Should make for quite an interesting spring in 2020 to see how it affects things both on and offsite.
