Question Do you use a clickable logo or navigation button to return to the home page?

Hi, I wanted to share some thoughts on a small issue.

Well, I have never thought about this topic. I was simply browsing the Internet one evening and came across one blog post or forum, I can't remember anymore.

The topic was about what works better. A clickable logo as a return to the home page or a button in the navigation usually in the first position.
I personally preferred the clickable logo and not having a Home Page button on my site. It was obvious to me.

However, having some time, I checked in detail the visits and destinations on my site, records and heat maps. It turned out that many people don't even bother to click on the logo, unaware that it's where the return to the Home Page is.
This surprised me because clickable logos are an obvious practice for me. Adding to the fact that I have a vertical menu and the logo is not tiny, it surprised me even more.

And what solution do you guys prefer on your sites?

We have both the clickable logo and a home button to catch all. It is logical to click the logo but lots of people don't.

Yeah, I'd say both is the logical approach. But if you've got the 'home' menu item close(ish) to the logo, then you don't really need the logo linking home anyway.

I used to have just the clickable logo, but now I prefer having both options. One of the things I've learned (the hard way) is that what I like or find logical may not be the same as what my audience prefers.

Good question dannyx. In fact, good enough I decided to feature it as our GPWA Times Newsletter Poll of the Week, so I added a poll to match the question you asked, aligned the poll question and thread title, and redirected your post to the poll forum where we collect polls together for greater long-term visibility.

Right off the top, I assumed that all the sites I'm involved with did both. However, it ends up I was wrong. Every site I am involved with does both with two exceptions that only use clickable logos: GPWA.org and GPWAtimes.org.

Maybe we should add home button navigation to the GPWA sites too. Although I'm guessing that with our audience being webmasters, probably just about everyone here does not give it a second thought.

Precisely! If there's one thing we all are, it's masters of web navigation.

PS Sadly, that probably won't cut it as an epitath when the time comes!

Both, if you've got room to do both then seems the best option so as to cater for all.

I only use the logo to return to the main page. You need to be careful not to create circular links from an SEO point of view.

I use both.Clickable logo and navigation buttons. It seems that some readers are unaware of the existence of clickable logos. After realizing it, it seems to be convenient.

I usually use both. Althought many people know that they can return to the home page by clicking a logo, some people still don't. That is why if there is a space, I usually create the button to return to the home page.

Never really thought about it tbh. But so far I've only had a logo that leads back to the home page.

Should add "nofollow" to the link of the logo so that it does not convey weight?

No follow for your home link?
    Disagree with that.

In 2+ decades as a casino affiliate, that's one of the craziest, hair-brain suggestions, I've ever heard.

I used to use both but switched to logo only a year or so ago. I can't remember I read it but having the home button seemed unnecessary and old school. Anyone using the internet in 2023 knows to click logo to go to home screen so made sense to remove it.

This is a question that made me question whether my actions were correct, but now I am confident in my choice. I only use a clickable logo and breadcrumbs on the pages. Almost all websites use a logo to return to the home page, and I'm sure users are already aware of this. Adding a separate button seems a bit outdated to me. Also, the user can use breadcrumbs to return to the main page.
