Rankmath suggests it's a good idea and improves SERPS so we include one.

There would be an easy/straightforward way to know the answer to this...

Whenever you are doing any competitor analysis, or indeed any time you've searched for something on Google, go to the first few pages in the results and see if those pages have a TOC.

My bet is you'll find a mixture, some do, some don't.

Now ofc many factors could be influencing why one with a TOC might be above one without, or vice versa.

But I'll suggest that the fact that pages rank without one suggests they're not valuable for on page SEO. For users, yes, they might add value. And that, in turn, can contribute to better page performance from an SEO perspective.

I recently added one, and I found it to be really good for making the experience better for the users.

I think it can, indirectly - a table of contents improves structure and UX, which can improve SEO performance over time.
But I don't think we should add it for improving SEO, only when it's actually useful to the user.

It’s not magic, but it’s almost always worth adding for long-form content such as guides, tutorials, technical docs, etc.

In my experience, a table of contents can definitely help, especially on longer pages. It improves user navigation and allows visitors to quickly jump to the section they’re interested in, which can increase time on page. From an SEO perspective, it can also help Google better understand the page structure through anchor links. I wouldn’t say it’s mandatory, but for longer guides or reviews it’s usually a good addition.

Especially on longer reviews or comparison pages a TOC makes a real difference. Users jump straight to the section they actually care about instead of bouncing. Not sure it moves the needle directly in rankings, but the signals are a nice bonus. Short pages I skip it anything over 1000 words it's become a standard part of my template.

Yeah I also think TOC helps. In the days of AI, any way to provide better structure on a page that helps bots and humans at the same time, understand it better I think is something worth doing. However I would not add a TOC on short articles of like 300 words. Long form of 2000+ words would surely be helped by well structured TOC imo.

It does help, especially on pages with a lot of content. I wouldn't use it on shorter pages. I wouldn't go nuts but using a link to every H2 is super beneficial for the reader and for search engines.

Table of content would help you improve the user experience if done properly. Also it helps google display "summary" boxes on the serps. I would say it is worth adding it given the low complexity

I think a TOC helps more with usability than with SEO on its own. On long casino reviews or guides, it makes the page easier to scan and lets people jump straight to things like payments, KYC or bonus terms. But on short pages I wouldn’t force it

A TOC definitely helps with jump links, but the real key is structure. When structuring casino reviews, strict H2/H3 hierarchy is non-negotiable. I keep paragraphs short and rely heavily on bullet points for mobile scannability. If it's not optimized for mobile scanning, you are losing conversions, TOC or not.

TOCs work very well for me. Google sometimes displays their jump links as clickable buttons in the search snippets. That’s good evidence they still matter, at least for structure and visibility in the SERPs. So, I recommend using TOCs. Every single element, despite how small matters.

PaulEchere is only person in this thread who measured anything, and his result is one worth building on. He lost affiliate clicks and gained nothing in rankings.

That matches how I think about it now. TOC is only layout decision, not SEO. It competes for space on first screen with content you actually want to direct visitors to. On mobile first screen is roughly size of single product card, and full list of headings fills it completely.

What we do on our own pages:
TOC lives in sidebar, next to content rather than above it. That is the part that matters on review pages, because there reader wants offer and verdict first. Placement solves problem that collapsing only hides. It lists H2 only. Full outline of every H3 turns into wall, and wall gets skipped.

As for ranking question, navigation links that sometimes appear below search result are not reward for having TOC. Google generates them from heading structure and anchors, and it does this whether you print visible list at top or not. So if those links are what you are after, spend effort on clean heading levels and stable anchor ids, not on visible list.

One practical pitfall worth mentioning, since people here use page builders. Some builders generate anchor ids that do not match heading text. Jeepers Creepers mentioned exactly this earlier in thread. When that happens links still work for users, but anchor stops describing section, and you lose that small signal. Worth checking before concluding feature had no effect

Tested it across several sites and didn’t see any impact.
