I missed the spam, but I would assume it's all automated bots/scripts that look for anyplace they can post to and then do so. I doubt some spammer was specifically targetting that board, they're trying to hit EVERY board, blog, etc. they can

That is some hard coding if that is the case.

    Just a thought

My understanding of the spammers that post on various forums, blogs, etc. is that they have a computerized script that will attempt to create an account.

Generally these are setup to recognize specific types of forum or blogging software, and they can even get past some levels of security (including weaker captcha I believe)

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, as I'm certainly no expert on this, but could've sworn that was the case.

Worth looking into more closely. I can understand how spam blog bots would work but V spammer bots, not sure.

I never seen a script for one worth taking a closer look.

Spot on. When I first migrated to vBulletin I was slammed with spam bots. They can easily pass the default CAPTCHA, installing the re-CAPTCHA hack really slows them down, then adding a minimum post requirement before a video/image or link can be posted has nearly eliminated the issue. I had not seen a porn shot on my board since March 2009.

@Robin: Don't feel bad, Paul gave me the link and I had no "Not safe for work" warning and my wife was across the room. Glad I can task switch in a hurry. That was some explicit crap there.

Thanks for confirming Chips. Yeah, with our social network we've disabled html on profile comments (since that is a common form of spam on networks like Myspace) and then limited PM's to 5 at a time to try and keep the problem down.

We still encountered a recent signup that sent out PM's from a "girl" trying to get guys to "contact" her through another site though. It's a never-ending battle against the spammers.
