Firefox - Slow and Hanging

Has anyone else notice how slow Firefox has become? It was slow, hanging and "not responding". For the past two weeks I have been trying all sorts of things to correct it. This morning to prepare to post this post I wanted to mention the version I have been using, 56.0.1, the latest at the time. There was an update to be made that I accepted and seems to be helping. New version is 56.0.2

Thought I would mention in case others have a problem. Eventually I hope to switch away from Firefox I think.

For me, Firefox is terribly slow to use 1 GB of RAM and I have 4 tabs open

I'm using FireFox Quantum...57.0b11 (64-bit). It's the next generation FF. I'm not sure when the offical release is, but the beta's I've used, are lightning fast (PC is i7, 16gig low latency ram). Quantum, compared to Chrome, is heaps faster, with far less resources used.






I agree though, the current production FF, is slow and sucks system resources.

I've been experiencing issues with various browsers. Especially Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.

I have found that Firefox 32 bit outshines the 64 bit version hands down, and in fact have had to downgrade (uninstall 64 bit and reinstall 32 bit) a few times because a standard FF update with automatically put in the 64 bit version. (I normally keep the updates turned off but forgot and ran the updates a few times without manually updating)

Every single time I have attempted to run the 64 bit version, I start having memory issues almost immediately, and it is always cleaned up and runs smoother after.

I think you can type about(colon)performance in the FF address bar of a tab (at least in version 52.4.0 -32 bit) and it shows which opened tab is slowing it down. I use yahoo email now and then and it always reports it as what is causing FF to slow down. Close the yahoo and it runs faster.

I use Chrome as well and don't have any problems but like some of the features with FF better, that and old habits are hard to break.

Well I am running 56.0.1 and for that last few versions some settings were in about:config and the last version or 2 I think, they moved the hardware acceleration back to the advanced page of options.

Look under the performance section making sure the show advanced options is enabled.

I have not tried the version happyfeet recommended yet, but I may.

Thanks everyone for your feedback. I downloaded Firefox Quantum and it is amazing. All problems solved and so quick. If you are a Firefox user then you need to check it out.

Thanks that is a few votes for trying it, do any of you know if it does not work in particular situations, can you easily downgrade or uninstall-reinstall without problems?

I have gone back and forth between the 32bit and 64bit versions pretty smoothly so I am guessing it should be ok.

I tweak the cr#p out of my OS. Practically bare bones, but just enough to use internet.

To achieve these tweaks, I've been following Black Viper (for years). Unlike other sites who claim to know the ins and out of Operating Systems, this guy definitely knows his stuff. Best of all it's 100% free. I dare say because my OS is ultra tweaked, I don't get too many slow issues etc.

I gave up on FireFox long ago for this exact reason! I begrudgingly switched to Chrome and I have to be honest I now prefer it and haven't had any issues!
