Hi I’m thinking of setting up a couple of US sites (I’m currently U.K. focussed). Some people have told me I need to get a license to promote US betting sites, is that true?

For context, one would be sports focussed and the other would be casino focussed. Both would only promote operators properly licensed in America.

It differs per state in the us and also per vertical. Most of them you need a license as an affiliate, which takes a lot of time and effort to get.

cliff notes:

you need a license to promote in NJ, PA, CO, IN, and WV. States launching will also need a license: MI, TN, and VA. Each state has a different but similar licensing process.

IL and IA are unknowns at this point - likely an operator won’t work with you unless you hold at least one other states license.

all the above is for sports, but applies to Casino as well - currently you can promote online casinos in NJ, PA, and WV. MI soon.

For both horse racing and online lotteries = no license required.

mmm good to hear. we have been promoting us casinos for years and never used any form of license. i have also never been by the onlime casinos we promote to provide this.

Will do some research now for sure as i do not want to get in any kind of problem.

I guess in this case you are talking about casinos which dont have licenses themselves, and which are considered illegal in the us. Because usually they will ask you for a license when you sign up, and you also need some contacts from the casinos to get the affiliate license in the first place (as far as i can remember).

I think in USA the good way to promote casinos now, would also be to promote sweestakes casinos. They seem to get more popular now and are legal in almost all of the states.

It would be great to illustrate by picking one state and showing the steps to gain a licence, the requirements, the conditions, the cost, the expected timeframe, ect.
