When somebody asks a genuine question and wants to learn something constructive answers will be far more useful.
they have learnt something with my reply, that the google link tool (link:domainname) doesn't work, which then leads to the same ending, total waste of time

There are several tools that will give you a really good idea about your Back links.

You can never know for sure, unless google tells you (It nevr happened Google can tells you)But I think it is safe to assume that Google knows what all the tools know... and then some.

Regarding the original post, I find that Ahrefs.com is the best tool for tracking links. A free account will get you 15 searches a day but I do suggest to pay for it, they also have a very good link tool that will help you avoid a penguin penalty. OSE is an ok tool but is slow to update, however they provide a better view for when acquiring links the Domain Authority and Page Authority DA/PA are important factors to consider.

Regarding the argument about the link disallow or disavow whatever you want to call it, I did hear Matt Cutts talk about this briefly. He stated they were "thinking" about it which could mean anything, I personally will not be anticipating this tool coming any time soon. In my experience and opinion this tool is not even needed, a long time ago I had someone backlink spam my site and I didn't lose any rankings. Also these links have died off after a while as the spammers remove them to spam other sites. Granted that was like 2 years ago but I have seen sites that are still ranking even though they have lots of what we consider backlink spam. I feel like the only people that want this button are the people that have manually either bought crappy links or have a google penalty.

Alexa is not accurate at anything. I don't use it to track site performance or backlinks.
