My site was the same.... I noticed a huge boost in organic traffic then it dropped back down again. There's been a lot of movement lately so I think Google is preparing to roll out the Penguin algorithm some time soon......

If I am not mistaken there will be a Penguin 3.0 update soon, as per searchenginewatch.
Of course, this will not be announced by Google on when it will actually take place but this serves as a heads up for all of us especially webmasters.

Seeing some more marked changes today and a few unfamiliar websites popping up in key page 1 positions, maybe this rumoured Penguin update is getting closer...

Yes there's been a lot of yo-yoing and instability this month, looks like to me Google have been testing various things.
Possibly it's that Google can't seem to make their mind up about the right formula between quality content, trust rank of the overall site and amount of incoming links to a page.
Brands still coming out on top though - that is the constant.

Interestingly I've seen a few long forgotten (and given up on) pages reappear too, horribly out of date though so that creates another issue in itself! May well suggest that different variations of the algorithm are being tested in the live SERPs as you say, will have to wait and see how it pans out.
