Have you ever seen a solar eclipse?

This coming Monday, 21 August 2017, there will be a solar eclipse. A total eclipse will be visible in portions of the United States. A partial eclipse will be visible in West Europe, North/East Asia, North/West Africa, North America, much of South America, the Atlantic and the Artic.

So, for this week's poll I thought I would ask members if they have ever seen a solar eclipse, or expect to this coming week. Are eclipses something you find fascinating or boring? Why or why not? Have you ever traveled to see one?

Yes, I have, and everyone should ask her-/himself one question for the next time this happens:

How is it possible, that the Moon's shadow exactly fit between Earth and Sun, that all distances and all sizes fit so exactly, that the probability, that this happened by chance is so small, that perhaps this happens one time in the whole Milky Way?

Moreover: The distance from Moon to Earth is not the same all the time. Hundreds of thousands of years the Moon was so big, that this kind of Solar Eclipse was not possible, and the same in the future in hundreds of thousands of years, when the Moon is too far away.

Exactly at that time, when human beings are able to think about the sense and genesis of their existence, about their role in the universe, exactly at that time, when - for a limited time of a few thousands of years - all three players, Earth, Moon and Sun have this scientific unexplainable distance to each other?

I've never seen one but I'd love to. I am obsessed with naturally beautiful things like that. Sunsets, sunrises, moon phasing.
I take so many photos of the sunset that we don't even call it the sunset anymore in the office. We say it's "so blessed" outside. There's just something about them that relaxes me.

The supermoon from Sydney last year was pretty disappointing. A normal moon appears bigger than the supermoon did.

I doubt we'll be able to see the eclipse from Sydney but if we can I'll def make the effort to see it.
Edit: Yeah I was right - we can't see it from here. Bummer. Looking forward to seeing some photos.

i only don´t know the exact hour (here) that it will be more visible but i will try to snap and send it to you

I have seen one and a couple of partial solar eclipses from where I live in South Africa.

I prefer to trust verified facts and don't attribute matters which I don't understand to magical all knowing entities.

No one knows the odds, because no one knows how many planets and moons there are in space. Astronomers have discovered 893 planets in distant solar systems so far (as of June 21, 2013), and we don’t know much about their moons. - EarthSky.

I've never seen a solar eclipse before. I'm very fearful of actually going completely blind. I never want to take a chance with my vision. Even if it does require special protective eye glasses for the procedure. I know that it is an incredibly amazing phenomena.

Is the moon actually moving away from the Earth? It appears to be closer to Earth and then farther out on various occasions.

I saw one as a young kid, it was quite magical. I would love to see one as an adult though. Perhaps someone could plan an iGaming conference somewhere to coincide with one and I can write it off as a business expense?

I remember when I was a kid we had nearly 70% of sun covered. It was nothing special to me. Watching lightning in the winter were way more exciting. The only important thing for solar eclipse lovers: please guys make sure u have definitely appropriate radiation filter for watching. So many people damage their retinas. Usual sun glasses from retail are not enough.

Yes, I saw a total solar eclipse on 11/08/1999. On the midday came the night...., darkness everywhere, without any sign of light in the sky. Although it lasted only a few minutes, it was quite enough for remembering that day as one of the most misterious and magical days of my life.

Many times, full, partial, bored of it. I get my kicks from watching ISS through a telescope.

Want to see aurora borealis though. Could even be bothered to make the trip all the way north to hunt for it.

here in Portugal, only in some places was something visible, where i live, saw nothing
