I assume a pop up in most cases would do exactly the opposite. Make sure your content is eye catching. Add links that will make the visitors clickthrough to related topics and so on.

make sure you deliver what your link and keywords are saying. If they were interested in the link, then them they want to see what you said you have. If you deliver 200 banners and pop ups im just turning around and going to the next results

Yes you want to make sure the content supports whatever they user is searching for to decrease the bounce rate. No popups arent going to help either.

Add a larger variety of content that encourages the visitors to stay longer on your site and to browse more pages. Free games, news stories, exclusive bonus offers, etc

I would stay away from a popup. It really isnt great for the reader. I cant stand when I get a popup on a site. The sites I stay on have really good content and they also have videos, infographics and animated infographics. If you ever read an article on Moz dot com you will see that they have gifs after every couple paragraphs that are funny and relevant. I would read some articles on Moz and watch the Moz videos to get more ideas. Good luck.

People get obsessed about bounce rate, depending on the type of traffic you have depends on your bounce rate, someone looking for that last minute game 30 mins before kick off rarely stays on site to flick through pages, they want what they are looking for then they are gone, if you do enough job on conversions then they are bouncing off to an affiliate program, this whole bounce rate myth came along by some old school SEO's who still believe it to this day bounce rate does not mean bad content, and if you are worried about bounce rates then a pop up will make it worse,

The best advice for keeping bounce rate low is good content.. the days of typing out any old c**p have gone, link manipulation is dying and readers are much smarter..
