Default i frames help with seo.

    HI there,

Recently my programmers decided to build a site based on i frames. I have to admit i know nothing about it...

The site is in testing now..

    http://www.raiseyourpokercareer.com

We have several pages and its in both Dutch and English.

    Here is my issue..

I noticed that when a link is clicked the url does not change. Its constantly the home page in the address bar.

I had originally thought they would be dynamic html pages.. so that when you click a page it creates a url with html extension.

The said i frames will load site faster but wheni do research into this it seems for seo purposes i frames is bad.

Is there a way to add a rule in the .htaccess file to create a url when a link is clicked??

I know we can add a site map with html pages but i still only see one url?

Should we chage the whole thing?? or can this be fixed..

I love the site and it looks neat but i was ready to invest allot in link building but not for one url only...

    Any ideas??

    Steve

iframe pages are separate html pages and with iframes you have to set a target window which the did (in bold) where you want the html page content to appear. Acutally in this case they're targeting another iframe.

The full url won't appear in the address bar because iframe use the target attribute to tell which window/iframe to display the content in.

    <a class="menu_item" href="pages/pagesEN/01_RYPC_home/pokernews.html" target="page_frame">Pokernews</a>

Although I haven't played with iframes in a few years I also read they were a bad way to go.

I believe what happens is the SE's will crawl iframe html pages and list them in SE.

    http://www.raiseyourpokercareer.com/...pokernews.html

When a visitor comes across the iframe html page in the SE and clicks it they'll just get that page and not the main site. ( click the link I posted above for an example)

You could put a no follow on each iframe page or use a robots.txt file to disallow certain files/directories but that would defeat the SEO purposes.

I assume you could have a redirect in an .htaccess file but I'm not sure how to do it and it seems a bit of a chore.

Personally, I'd dump the iframes, with the high speed data transfer rates they have with broadband and even dsl, page loading considerations are only pertinent with pages with large graphics and/or files.

I'm sure there are more knowlegable members that can weigh in here.

    Good advice slotplayer.

These days the SE's don't have the bandwidth limits they have in the past and even a page that is 200k+ will get crawled easily.

SE's also parse your navigation to cut down bamdwidth usage and crawl more frequently and deeper.

The only current files that you have on your site of any real size are the banners for luck3.gif and aced.gif. One is 188888k and the other is 262998k

    I did find a couple problems that should be fixed though;

    http://www.raiseyourpokercareer.com/../local/common/casino.html
error code: 404 (not found), linked from page(s):
    http://www.raiseyourpokercareer.com/

    http://www.raiseyourpokercareer.com/../local/common/links.html
error code: 404 (not found), linked from page(s):
    http://www.raiseyourpokercareer.com/

    http://www.raiseyourpokercareer.com/../local/common/RYPC_videos.html
error code: 404 (not found), linked from page(s):
    http://www.raiseyourpokercareer.com/

    http://www.raiseyourpokercareer.com/../local/localEN/contact.html
error code: 404 (not found), linked from page(s):
    http://www.raiseyourpokercareer.com/

    http://www.raiseyourpokercareer.com/../local/localEN/sitemap.html
error code: 404 (not found), linked from page(s):

    http://www.raiseyourpokercareer.com/...recensies.html
error code: 404 (not found), linked from page(s):
    http://www.raiseyourpokercareer.com/

    And these 302's need to be changed to 301's;

    http://www.sunpoker.com/
    redirected to: http://www.sunpoker.com/home/index.asp?lid=en
status code: 302 (object temporarily moved)
    linked from page(s):

iFrames also cause some anti-virus software to chuck a spazz and not let you view the page because they can be used maliciously, so this might actually prevent some people from viewing your site completely..

My suggestion would be to go for CSS.

    Cheers

    Hey thanks for the comments.

Gary thank you for your attention on this I just received an email from the programmers who want documented proof i frames are bad for seo purposes.

The dont really want to change it, if there is a work around, but of course I want to make this SEO freindly as possible.

DO you know any current documentation up to date that clerly shows i frames are a problem?

I think they want to continue the use of iframes and i can honestly say i dont.

But allot of work was put into it..

Honestly, someone using iframes in 2009 for web design or coding shouldn't call himself web designer/coder.

GFPC, looking over your site I don't see anything special that couldn't be solved using CSS and some smart XHTML coding.

Gotta agree.. I can't believe a designer is using iframes over CSS, especially since it's rumoured that the engines prefer CSS over anything else too.. (someone please correct me if I'm wrong as things may have changed since I last heard that)

The fact that most anti-virus programs block sites with iframes would be my reason never to use them.. by using them you are restricting people from visiting your site, which IMO could cost you more than actually getting your site re-coded.

Besides that, I don't know if other affiliate programs do it, but we do not allow the use of iframes because of their mostly malicious use.. So I guess that will be one thing standing in the way of promoting us, and any other programs that don't allow it.

    Thanks Renee,

Yeah i have done some extensive research on this for the last 2 days.

I have noticed that browsers do block i frames in the past, and am aware of all the drawbacks.

I have asked it be changed, and I am positive it will be.

    Thanks

    Steve

here's what i got bout iframe
From a search engine optimization point of view, the use of the IFRAME is problematic for several reasons. First, whenever a search engine spiders the content that’s within an IFRAME, the search engine will normally link to the IFRAMED page itself instead of the “master” page it is housed within. Often, this means searchers are delivered to a page without site navigation. This is not optimal for keeping the attention of search engine spiders or visitors.

A couple of more things about your page:

    1. top menu doesn't display correctly in Opera 9.62
    2. the language switching flags are not linked, insted JavaScript is used to change the url of the page. SE's won't crawl both languages
    3. don't want to say anything about the iframes, others have said it already
    4. no DOCTYPE specification, no html/xhtml version and language specified (you want to have a multilanguage page as I understand)
    5. tables used for layout purposes
    6. the spinning logo/chip in the background is annoying, makes the text harder to read
