What did you want to be when you grew up?

When I was in my teens I thought of a few things but the last two choices I had in mind before leaving school were Translator and Neuro-Surgeon.. go figure, I ended up being a web developer.

I'd still love to be a neuro-surgeon. I love everything about the brain.

Did anyone actually become what they wanted to be?

I wanted to be the next Einstein. I was such a nerd.

Now I want to be able to retire in 5 years, and I love my job !

If I could retire in 5 years that would be great.. Doesn't look like it's going to happen though unless I win the lotto :P

What sort of nerdy things did you do?

Unfortunately I am STILL such a nerd.. I try to tell people I'm a geek but they say "No, you're a nerd"

Well Renee, you would have to do backs too, and you are a far cry prettier than my current neurosurgeon. Mine billed out 18.5K for 6.5 hours of surgery btw.

I reserve my chance to answer the question.

Cool.. I wanted to be a plastic surgeon. I got as far as competing for post graduate studies at different universities. I almost missed my opportunity to be a webmaster when I came in number 5 out of 87 competitors for a surgical (plastic) residency in Columbia. I missed it by a fraction of a point. <<sigh>> One month after I lost the competition, Chaves (pres Venezuela) started his campaign against Columbia. The following year they would not let me compete , due to the fact that I'm an American. They said that it was dangerous.. I listened! I don't think I could respond to my emails too quickly from a hostage camp.

I was lucky because I met my girlfriend about 6 months later. She is a nurse and worked at a plastic surgery clinic. While dating her I really understood what the life style was really like. I found that I didn't want to do it as much as before. It's one of those things were the "fantasy" and reality do not coincide.

Now, I couldn't be happier as a webmaster. I have so much more fun, and love every minute of it. It doesn't feel at all like work (most of the time ). lol

So, I've got the greatest job in the world and know it! lol</sigh>

When I was a child, I wanted to be an engineer for the NASA. I succeeded in becoming an engineer after 6 long years of studies and a lot of parties. Guess what ? I began my career in truck's world ! Then I decided to leave it and come back to a more familiar world full of computer, code lines...
And for some time now, here I am, doing what I should always have done !

I always wanted to be a radio presenter.

Now I'd just be happy enough to be financially solvent.

I think you're right about the lifestyle.. These medical shows make it seem so much fun and so great, but I think in reality it's not like that. I know a few surgeons and doctors and because of the hours they work, we will be at dinner and they will just micro sleep at the table. It's funny to watch but I think that in itself would be tiring sometimes.

The great thing about our industry is that no matter where you are and what time it is, you can always do your work, or not do it. Unless of course you work in an office

It's funny how it feels that way after you work in a real job eh.

My substitute now is reading books about the brain. I think thats the closest I'm going to get, and I've learned two languages already, and am learning my third now (other than English of course) so I think I'm on my way to being as close as a translator as I possibly can..

It changed many times over the early years, I wanted to be a sailor at one point, and did join the Navy.

The deep burn had to be I wanted to write, I guess I am living a part of that dream even though it is not in print, only virtual print. So does that count?
