I think we can all agree that mistakes like this can happen (even though in this case, it's quite ironic, I have to agree). If you've never been there, oh well. That's witchcraft!

However, let's try and maintain a "healthy" discussion and refrain from phrases like "crappy article." I do think this is a very unnecessary comment, but as PlayAttack, we would appreciate to get some constructive feedback to understand why you thought it was such a waste of your time.

I'd be pretty confident that anyone that's been in the game long enough would have been thinking - before they got to the article - this is probably going to be bad, but let's see how bad it is.

So for anyone experienced, it was a pointless read. It doesn't say anything of any value......although it was essentially written well enough.

Now that's not necessarily your fault...it's (very) hard to say anything new about backlinks....

So if you can't say something new, then the only real option is to say something that's going to at least go a number of steps further than basic stuff.

The problem is.....it only says about 5% of what anyone would really need to know.

So even for a beginner - where you could argue it does have some value - it goes nowhere near enough being truly valuable. There is much more that could have been covered from a beginner perspective.

Thanks for your extensive reply! Most of the things you've mentioned, really do make sense. It is true that an article should always aim to educate someone about a topic. However, allow me to bring up two points, which I think matter in this discussion.

1. The headline of the article is not 'clickbaity': the title doesn't claim that the reader is going to come across some ground-breaking tips from link building experts. Therefore, I do think that it's quite reflective of the actual content that you'll read through if you choose to spend your time on reading this article. Personally, I only consider something a waste of time when it doesn't meet my expectations (and most of the times, it's due to a misleading title). I think it's not the case here.

2. We only started working on our blog a couple of months ago, and our thinking here is "progression." Even our previous articles focused on the basics. "How to start in affiliate marketing," "how to choose an affiliate program" - these were some of the topics we covered. Now, as the time goes by, and we've worked enough on covering the basics, the content will become more in-depth, and we will seek to answer specific user queries that are related to the topics we choose to cover. There are many ways to go about this, but we chose one that starts from the basics and progresses as we go further.

As mentioned above, we do get what you're talking about, and it's not "ungrounded." It is actually refreshing to see that somebody cares enough to give our blog a read and takes the time offer constructive feedback. Thanks for your comments!

Now that's a very fair point, and very well made. I'd be guilty of approaching it from the wrong perspective. But written material is for an audience....and when you post here, that audience - for the most part - is made up of some fairly (and in many cases I suspect, extensively) well informed webmasters. Maybe the answer to that would have been to introduce it as "here's the latest in our build-up series of articles looking at covering affiliate marketing at a base level" But we'll all know that next time

Again agreed. But again, probably wrong audience for here. You're right in what you say, but the way it's worded does imply some value. From what's written, it's difficult to understand the intent - because it doesn't seem to have been intended to educate. So it was written just because the blog needed content? Or maybe it's actually intended for an audience outside this forum. Or maybe you wanted the backlink and traffic to it

Bottom line.....I think you need to go deeper. In which case you still might not be able to say anything new, but you may get recognized (better) for the effort.

The good news is you may get more eyeballs from now on curious to see how you progress.

And....whoever the author was...don't let them get downhearted by any negative comments. As I said, what was there was reasonably well written.

It's a standard 1000 word blog post with well-written storytelling text, a bit about everything overall.
If you want to be found on Google with such texts, you need to start (dofollow) linking to the sources you mention,
not particularly in this post, but every time you write one. Otherwise, you will end up reading it only yourself.
