Default Is the industry going downwards?

    Hi guys,

Seems to me that the affiliate industry has less potential than it used to. There are many things which are not going the way they should be. Affiliate programs are starting to change their terms, see bwin, ladbrokes and others, and it seems just a matter of time until most of the bookmakers/casinos will implement terms unfavouring the affiliates. It`s almost a fact.Things look to go in a bad direction.

Besides, regulations and laws are starting to become a problem. After several countries changed their terms regarding online gambling, being an affiliate in Romania (my native country) begins to seem impossible. From now online gambling services need to be licenced in our country, run servers here and pay unreasonable taxes in order to be able to accept romanian customers. It will be some time until things really go legal, but the law is clear and is in effect. Naturally, promoting unlicenced companies is illegal too, so it looks pretty clear to me that I and my fellow romanians will need to shut down our activities or find other ways to monetize our websites.

MAYBE a few bookies will find it wortwhile to obey these regulations but it`s rather unprobable and you can forget about bingo or anything else.

All in all, it doesn`t look good, and for me, being a romanian, it really seems like the end, at least temporary.

    Good luck guys !

Well if you can't advertise Ladbrokes without getting shafted, I'm inclined to agree with you.

Being an affiliate has never been illegal. Am I wrong? Maybe Romanian law incriminated affiliates too? This seems to be a precedent.

Well, for me the new regulations in Romania are the ones that hurt the most. Years of hard work down the drain ...

But forget that, every problem is a hidden oportunity. I`m moving to a foreign hosting company and I`m starting new websites in english from scratch. More competition, but also much more experience for me. And now comes the problem for all affiliates ... is the future compromised?

It seems to me that bwin practically made a revolution in the affiliate industry. I was expecting what is happening now, ladbrokes, party are allready following the path and there is no logical reason to think that the others won`t do the same. It`s not profitable to be among the few that offer high convertion rates as long as the big guns took things to a different level. Maybe the "small" bookies/casinos/bingohalls could speculate and attract more customers by keeping affiliates happy but I doubt it. Best case scenario some of them will keep the rates an inch higher. The move has been made and everyone will be happy to cut expenses without offering less than the competition.

In my opinion, the 25-35% rates can be forgotten. One year from now all new affiliates will get max 15% and old/succesful affiliates will also be badly hurt. For sure terms and conditions will also be predatory.

Volatile indeed, F-L-C. Things don`t look good.

@Imperator. I`m pretty sure promoting a company that is operating illegaly is a crime. Anyway, romanian offline bookies are allready planning to take down the affiliate websites, and they have big influence.

I heard TV stations have allready paid fines for promoting unlicenced online bookies after the law came in effect. I can`t say for sure, but my source is pretty solid.

It's so sad to read such posts. Rostick, good luck. Perhaps it's just a stage and we're at the beginning of something new

I hate to say it, but I really do think that things are going down hill. everything seems so cut-throat now.
