I used to have trouble sleeping as well but found the best way to get back to a normal sleep pattern is to get into a regular routine. It may sound simple but it's not that simple.

For instance, try to go to bed and wake up about the same time every night, even on weekends. What happened for me, was that I would sleep in until almost 11 on weekends and then get off my cycle. When I started getting in a routine and going to bed at about the same time every night and getting up at about the same time, my body clock was much more in tune with itself.

Even if you get 4 hours of sleep, try to go to bed and get up at the same times each night. So if your regular sleep is going to be 1 AM to 8 AM, try to do that each night. If one night is 4AM to 8 AM, go to bed at 1 AM and get up at 8AM the next day.

That helped me, along with cutting caffeine at night, not eating before I went to bed, reading as opposed to being on the computer before I went to bed, and having a notepad and paper next to my bed to write down things that I knew I would forget the next day.

I still think the most important is a consistent routine.

I think our 3 little girls have insomnia. None of them sleep for more than 2 hours before waking up. (They're all 17 months old.)

A regular sleep pattern is just a strange idea in our house right now!

Triplets, 17 months old omg that sounds like hard work but no doubt very rewarding. So sweet!

I bet you have no insomnia problems of your own!

I have even gone without sleep for a whole night to try to get back in a routine - still could not sleep the following evening.

I haven't read all the posts or suggestions so apologies if I repeat anyone else's suggestion. I personally find that most problems like this you cannot solve with drugs and there is always a root to the problem that seems impossible to find.

So I would recommend the following and not to assume you don't do these activities, they are suggestions if you don't:

    Working out
If you get a serious work out into you it's really hard staying up all night as you'll feel tired and sleep better. I'm not much of a gym person myself but sometimes I do kick boxing and my sleep is always better when I'm training

    Get a massage
I find most people don't go for massages and feel they are more luxuries than the health benefits involved.

    Acupuncture
I love acupuncture and I started it to help rid of my sciatica but it's also a great way to deal with stress and to just relax. I feel just as good after acupuncture as I do with a massage and to think it's only a bunch of needles

    Hypnotherapy
I have tried it and I understand the benefits of it. Most people might think this is weird stuff but you never know what you are getting into until you try it. The worst case scenario you'll come out of a session feeling like you had a massage. The exercises to help put you in a trance are just relaxation exercises where you use your own mind to put yourself in a relaxed state. I listen to some of these tapes every once in a while myself.

Those are my serious answers. If you're looking for something less serious then I recommend the following:
