Quickly, after a few beers and ready to get shot down, i would imagine you could set up subdomains for each required country and set the geographic in google webmaster tools to serve the required countrys. Presuming that you are running all pages from the .com

I think that would work, not sure if its the correct way to go about it, or even if that is the answer to the question!

    But i hope it helps.

I am working on the principle that you are meaning visits from search engines and not just any visitor.

Thinking about it i may be talking rubbish, but see what other can offer in advice.

I think what you are getting at is that you want to actively sparse your visitors. Sending different players to different subfolders. I would not do that if I were you. That could easily be interpreted as cloaking because you are serving up diffrerent content for different visitors based on their specific region. It's better to use other methods to get your site as much coverage as possible.

After doing some research in our in-house SEO expert GaryTheScubaGuy posts and blog I found that your are right the best way to target different geographical regions is with the subdomains or different domain. Ideally France would be targeted with .fr cTLD. ie mysite.fr for france. Hosting and inbound links in these geographic regions help witht he local SEO.

To go target the different languages you would set up different subfolders with coresponding metatag info for the specific languages. For French is would be mysite.com/fr/ for french for example.

In the jove9999's site he set up different langauges for each folder. I would recomend definning the langauges in the metatags. He hasn't done that yet.

Remember that in this case you are targetting languages not geographical regions.

There is not enough information here for me to know for sure, but it can make sense to tailor what a visitor sees based on their geographic location and/or browser language preference.

For example, in the case of the GPWA approved portal seal, we serve a seal based on the user's browser language preference if we have a version of the seal in that language.

And in the case of the website online.CasinoCity.com we look at the ip address of a visitor and tailor the page based on the country where they are located. Specifically, we set a language preference and a geographic preference, and the produce tailored results taking those values into account.

In the case of google, for example, if you type in google.com you will normally be redirected to the google site for the country tld in which you are located when you do a search. Google does not consider this type of activity to be cloaking.

    Hi jove9999

    You can actually do this several ways;

IP delivery (as WagerX stated could be interpreted as cloaking if not implemented correctly) This is where your site delivers the content based on the IP location of the end user. There are acceptable ways to do this but there are easier and more effective ways

Language Identification by Google - This is they way its been done for quite some time. Google crawls the site, identifies the language and sorts it accordingly. Right now subdirectories off of TLD's are topping the search results (because TLD's are the oldest and usually have the other ranking elements like links, etc.) Along with this strategy you can use the language meta and tell Google your target language

Lastly - and I feel like WagerX (a champ in my book as he actuall does testing like I'm obsessed with) - the best way to go in planning for future algorithmic changes at Google is by using subdomains and Google geotargeting. The other benefit to this is that you can pass any trust and authority directly to your subdomains immediately and rank well in soft markets

To be fair, if I had a TLD with PR and links, I would build subdomains, use geotergeting, but I would also leave my subdirectories in place if they are there. The drawback here is you need to create new content (nativecontent.co.uk) but the benefits are that regardless of whether a frenchman is searching from France or in French, or from anywhere in French, or if anyone anywhere searches for results from France you have multiple chances of ranking. (*subdomains are considered completely seperate websites and can even rank in the same set of results in some instances)

Hope this doesn't confuse you. If you'll look through older posts for 'geotargeting' or the link below to my forum and search the same term there is a more detailed explanation and instructions.

One last thing - Previously I considered hosting location to be minimal at best in regards to regional targeting - this has become a more significant ranking factor as a result of testing we have recently done based off of Google's statements a few weeks ago. This isn't difficult or expensive so if you are going through the time and expense of subdomains, be sure to host them in the target region.

Feel free to email me with any questions.

Actually It is very easy to do + I think it's very SEO friendly - Even Google has it !

When to visitor come to your website you can check the preferred language (By browser ) from the server-side script.

Then to 301 if needed ... The code should check if the user preferred Swedish ... If so he will redirect to the Swedish site ... If not he will stay in the English site.
