Hi,

I believe there is not a day that goes by that i don't learn something new. Whether its something trivial or thought provoking which can alter the way you think about something or life changing.

So i thought it would be fun to have a thread were we can share something we learned today or any other day, that we didn't know before!

I will start with something i learned watching Cats 101 on Animal Planet the other day.

Did you know that 99.9% of all Calico Cats [orange, black and white in color] are female? There is an extra chromosome in a Calico cat that almost is only found in females. So if you happen to have a Calico cat that is a male, you have a very unique and special cat!

Thought that was quite interesting to find out.

OK last few

The saying "if you don't use it, you lose it" is totally true when it comes to your brain. The more you do something the larger the part of your brain that is used for that particular thing is (the brain map).
So for example, a person's brain basically stabilises at around 12 years old. That's why it's harder to learn a new language after that age. However, if you try even at around age 40 (eg), and learn one language and speak it regularly, your brain map for languages gets larger meaning that it becomes easier for you to learn more languages. So you could go from someone who can only speak english to someone who can speak 10 languages, just by starting to learn one and to keep going.

It's the same with instruments. Once you start learning, and the more you play the brain map grows so you will be able to learn more instruments and get better at them the more you play.

Also, if you lose a part of your brain (by stroke for example), other parts of your brain can take over. Your brain can learn.
You can also trick your brain which is how ex pats get rid of ghost limbs.

Now for my rant :P
I'm sure many of you know that I'm totally into the brain, and one of the best books I've ever read was The Brain that Changes Itself. Another great book was Elephants on Acid and other Bizarre Experiments.
If you're even the slightest bit interested in this stuff, you should read those books. They don't really use too many words that someone not familiar with medicine wouldn't know so they are easy to read. Very interesting stuff

During WWII the Germans realised that they were losing far to many aircraft at night and often on their own 'surprise' raids it sometimes seemed as if the RAF had been waiting for them... it was almost as if they could see in the dark! Of course they couldn't actually see in the dark and they hadn't become psychic but what they had done was invented RADAR.

This Radar gave them a competitive advantage but they didn't want to let on, else the enemy try to destroy it or steal it and develop their own version so they started to plant small stories in the press about certain Ace Fighter Pilots eating lots of carrots which could help them see in the dark. Now carrots do have some vitamins that are good for eyesight and carrots were one of the few foods in Britain at the time which was in plentiful supply.

By placing numerous small newspaper articles about the miraculous affect of carrots on night time vision they not only managed to fool their enemies for a while longer, they also helped encourage healthy eating during a time of food rationing and they also managed to create an urban myth that: Carrots Help You See In The Dark!
